Opinions wanted...

So there are many things out there that you are told to eat/not to eat during pregnancy. Since I haven't been able to talk with my doctor yet, I am curious to hear what your opinions are or what your dr. told you. Things like lunch meat or soft cheeses, caffeine, frozen yogurt, etc. All the controversial stuff.

Any opinions or insight would be great! I am so paranoid right now, especially because I read week 6-8 is the most vital.

Re: Opinions wanted...

  • my dr. told me about not eating lunchmeat, hot dogs etc. Stay away from caffenine but if you have any you should not have any more than a coffee cup full per day. She also told me about soft cheeses to avoid and to stay away from seafood.

She did not say anything about frozen yogurt though. I have not heard about that.

Just take good care of yourself and drink plently of water and take your prenatals!!!

Oh, no!  I didn't know about no seafood!  I eat fish for dinner every night.  I guess I should switch to chicken?  I was planning to ask the doctor on Thursday if I should cut that back, but I didn't know I wasn't supposed to eat it at all. Crying

  • Okay good to know. I saw that if you microwave your lunch meat until steaming, that its okay to eat, so I have done that. Also, that one serving of tuna a week is okay and two servings of shellfish. Natalee ... most fish has a lot of mercury in it which can be dangerous to the fetus. Definitely look up info, www.WebMD.com has been my site of choice to learn more, but its always nice to hear directly from people who are dealing with it.
  • Soft cheeses are only if the are not pasteurized, most cheeses in the US are unless you are eating some specialty cheese. Lunch meat is fine if its from a reputable source The problem with that is say when you by a pack of Oscar Meyer, have a slice and leave it in the fridge for a week, then listeria can form. Caffeine I personally don't consume even not pregnant, but most say its fine in moteration. Frozen yogurt, again, ok from a reputible source, just don't go to a $5.99 China Buffet and eat it where the machine may not be cleaned regularly. HTH!

  • My doctor used the word MODERATION a lot. He said just about anything is fine in moderation, including cheese (even FETA! GASP!), seafood, lunch meat, etc.

I lived on cereal, turkey sandwiches, & chicken gyros with feta cheese through my pregnancy...my baby didn't come out with 3 heads and an extra set of limbs :)

ETA: My doctor told me fish is GOOD for the baby, you just shouldn't be eating it for every meal. This goes to show you that everyone has a very different opinion :)

He also said one cup of coffee or 1 can of pop is fine.

  • Fish is tough because it is actually really good for your baby.  The problem is the mercury in fish.  Some kinds of fish have really high levels of mercury so you want to limit your intake of those.  I've heard salmon is the best to eat because it has the lowest mercury levels.
  • I knew about the mercury in tuna, etc., but I thought fish like tilapia was supposed to be good.  I think I'll just wait to see the doc on Thursday before making any adjustments.

I agree with AshNicole, it seems like every source tells you something different!

  • I stopped drinking coffee even though my Dr says I could have one cup a day...I was told not to eat hotdogs, or lunchmeat (which I did the first 4 weeks of my pregnancy because I had no clue), and no seafood, but I do not eat that anyway...And to stay away from some cheeses, other than that, I have not heard anything else.

My Dr. just said I must consume 2 liters of water a day....I can get down about 1.5...I do not like water that much!!

This, plus the idea of moderation. Don't go to extremes, and use common sense. Eat fresh, clean ingredients.  When in doubt, ask your doctor, that's what you pay him for.

I never understood the idea of heating lunchmeat - its not something I would ever do at any other time, so I didn't do it while pregnant.

  • I'm just curious, have you ladies been spending time on the 1st tri board??  If so, I highly recommend that you don't believe everything you read, especially there.  When I first found out that I was PG I lurked over there & couldn't believe the stuff that people were able to come up w/.... people were even posting about nailpolish being a potential hazard for your baby.....I have no idea if this is true, nor do I care (sorry if I just brought up another concern for you ladies) but I'm just letting you know how crazy & out of control it can get on the internet.
Yes, listeria can come from lunch meat & unpasteurized cheeses & some soft serve ice cream (please google or wiki listeria).  As a side note, I went to China after going to the Dr & half of what I ate while I was there, I had no clue what it was.  I've eaten Subway subs, b/c that's what I wanted & a hot fudge sundae from good old McD's.  I've eaten plenty of cheeses & I've also had my fair share of seafood.  I'm probably also going to eat some ceviche when I am in Peru for Christmas (one cannot possibly pass up the best ceviche @ Astrid & Gaston).

I keep the motto that I cannot go around being paranoid for my entire PG otherwise I am going to drive myself bonkers!!

  • I haven't spent any time on the first tri board, these are just the main things I have been seeing on a lot of the pregnancy Web sites and such. I think there is a warning about certain things for a reason, but agree with the whole moderation thing. We are all alive and well and I am sure our parents ate a lot of bad stuff.

I will try to avoid the main things that are said to not eat/eat in moderation but it doesn't mean I will never have a latte or a sandwich or some seafood.

Another thing in question ... what about the different sweeteners? Are there certain types better than others? Ones to avoid all together?

  • I ate all of this items during my first pregnancy.  My friend Julie just had her baby and she already gave me the lunch meat speech.  This is still something that I want to discuss with my doctor.

Exactly.  And my doctor told me to eat certain fishes in my third tri for the Omega3...I was also taking Omega3 supplements

I was only asking b/c that board is an absolute disaster w/ scaring the heebie jeebies out of any first time PG woman!!

Sorry, I'm absolutely no help on any of the sweetners as I don't use any of them for anything.

  • The issue is the same for lunch meat and soft serve - listeria.  Hearing up your lunch meat until steaming will kill it, and I also understand that it is better to use the pre-packaged kind rather than from the deli.  Another issue with lunch meats and hot dogs is nitrates, which are not very good for you in general.  Most cheese in the US will be safe because they are made from pasteurized milk.  Anything you buy in a grocery store will be labeled that it is made form pasteurized milk.  Fish is good for you but I believe it is recommended to limit it to two servings a week and avoid swordfish, shark, orange roughy, king mackerel, marlin, grouper, and tilefish entirely.  Chunk light tuna is recommended over albacore.  Raw fish, sushi, sashimi, and smoked fish are a no-no.  I quit caffeine entirely the first trimester, started drinking it a little in the second, until they told me she is small and then I stopped it again entirely.  My doctor did say that it is ok in moderation, however.  As for sweeteners, I don't believe there is any good evidence one way or another on artificial sweeteners.  I have been trying to avoid them for the most part and I am using sugar more than I did before i was pregnant.
