has your LO had a bladder/UT Infection?

if so how did you discover it? DD hasn't been feeling well the past few days and all of a sudden last night she started acting really uncomfortable for no reason. she would start crying and sorta squat. i know she isn't constipated, but DH was like is she okay, so i checked her diaper to make sure it wasn't pinching her or anything and i noticed she had just gone pee. my thoughts are she was upset because it was painful, i have a call in to the pedi but was wondering if you ladies had any wisdom! Thanks!

Re: has your LO had a bladder/UT Infection?

  • Yes!  My DD just got over a kidney infection.  Her symptoms were fever that wouldn't go down with medicine (for several days), smelly urine, and lots of irritability.  The doctor said the smelly urine was the giveaway.

Once at the doctor they got a urine sample and confirmed kidney infections.  Antibiotics made it better within 24 hours.

  • Our 6 year old DD is currently on Sulfa for a bladder infection.  She never once complained about pain, but had a fever on & off for 2 weeks & complained about being tired!!  I just thought she had a virus.  After 2 weeks, when the fever came back AGAIN after I thought it was gone for good, I took her to the doc.  He said everything looked fine, but that he wanted to run a blood panel & urine analysis to cover all the bases.  Low & behold she has a UTI!  The nurse said that based on her numbers it "looked like one that really hurts" but she never complained & even when asked specifically about pain when urinating said she had none.  Strange.

Now that I think back, though, at one point I did think to myself that her urine smelled "strong."  Within 48 hours of being on meds she was back to her old self...after 2 1/2 weeks of being sick, poor thing :(

  • BTW, we have a Katie Grace, too!  Love that name!

Hope your little one is OK.

  • My DD just got over a UTI finally. I woke up one morning and her urine smelled awful so my first instince was that there was a problem, but she was acting fine and didn't have a fever, so I chalked it up to hightened sense of smell because I'm pg. By the next Sunday her fever was 101 and she was really cranky and lethargic so I took her to the urgent care who said there was nothing wrong. Tuesday she was still cranky and the smell of her urine was strong again so I took her to the pedi and made them check her for a UTI and she had every marker there was. Now they want to do some anatomy checks because I guess it's rare for an 18 month old to have a UTI. Good luck.
  • DD had one back in June.  Her urine didn't smell funny or anything -- only giveaway was a really high fever (like 105 degrees high).  It wasn't until the 2nd doctor's visit that the doc checked for a UTI.  He kept chalking it up to a virus, and still didn't think it was a UTI, but decided to check anyway.  He was shocked that it came back positive.  She was put on Bactrim and the infection cleared up within a few days.  She has never looked so sick as when she had that UTI.  It was awful.  Her coloring was icky and she was so irritable and lethargic.  Unfortunately, because she got a UTI under the age of 2, we had to take her for testing which was NOT fun.
  • mine had one earlier this summer...had a fever, randomly burst out crying for seemingly no reason (realized it was when she peed). we went to urgent care where they first checked her ears, then did a urine test. it was positive. antibiotics did the trick. it was such a relief to finally know what it was, though we also had to do the extensive testing (vcug) because she's under 2. thank god all was fine.
