3rd Trimester

Probably dumb question about blood pressure

My blood pressure is normally around 80's/50's or 90's/60's. It was like this before I got pregnant too. I've always had lower pressure.

Yesterday at my MIL's on her home monitor it was 119/79. Would this be considered high for me, even thought it's in the normal range?

The reason I ask is because with all the swelling I've had recently, especially in my right ankle/foot only, they never checked my blood pressure yesterday at the doctor's when I had the doppler done to check for clots(there weren't any). My pressure was 90's/60's on Thursday at my OB's office.

I thought swelling+high blood pressure can be bad. Should I just stop worrying about it? WWYD?

Re: Probably dumb question about blood pressure

  • I would call just to be safe. I had high BP and this happened to me once, just one leg. It went down the next day - just check in with them.

  • First that pressure is not bad and during this trimester there should be a slight rise in pressure.  Second, don't put to much stock into those at home monitors vs. taking a normal blood pressure.  They are good for ball park estimates.  I think you are fine as long as you don't have a huge amount of swelling that happened suddenly.
  • I would call just to be on the safe side.

Because like you said, that's high for you, despite being in the normal range. Generally if there's an increase of 10-15% or more above your baseline, that could be considered elevated. Though there are generally accepted levels of BP, it really is all relative. If someone that normally had high BP (150s/90s) had a reading of 90/60, they'd probably be passing out--even though that's "normal" to you.

    Good luck!

  • Agreed with the PP about calling to be safe, but hopefully it's nothing.  My BP is similarly low EXCEPT when I take it at pharmacies or on electric machines.  It is almost always in the 120/70 range on electric machines and consistently low when taken "by hand".

In short ... don't worry too much, but calling is probably good any time there is a concern about the health of your little one (and you at this point).

  • Call to be safe, but home BP monitors are all different.  And it also depends on how old your MILs machine is, too.
  • That's not a dumb question!

I would call and ask your doc to check you.  That is high for you, but I don't know if it's something to be concerned about.  Wouldn't hurt to ask!

  • That is a pretty dramatic change I would call.  Even though you arent in the scary area of high BP its a change from your normal so they might want to continue monitoring it.  I know my dr. said they keep track of the BP and as long as it stays consistant (and within normal limits) shes not worried its when it goes up.  Hope all is well though it may be nothing.
