Success after IF

If you got a surprise BFP after getting pg with tx....

tell me about it! We are thinking of birth control options and I was just wanting to hear about people who actually got pregnant on their own for a second, third ect.

What was your diagnosis and treatment for baby 1, how far apart were your LOs?

We are teetering on not being protected at all and taking a see what happens approach. (Not expecting or trying for it to happen, but certainly welcoming anyone who decides to come along!!)

Re: If you got a surprise BFP after getting pg with tx....

  • not me, but a good friend of mine who needed femera/IUI to get pg with her 2 girls (2yrs apart) got pg on her own with #3 and recently just found out she's pg with #4 --- both of those all on her own, and somewhat of a surprise!  She has PCOS.

I had 2 normal cycles when i went off BCP to TTC #2 - so chances are I could have gotten pg on my own (i never had normal cycles in my life before!)... but we didn't want to waste time b/c of my age, and were worried about another m/c with an unmedicated pg (which we had before we started with the RE)

You never know--- and as my OB told me - make sure to use protection if you are not ready to get pg again- because it can happen!

I know a LOT of people on here and IRL who got pg very soon after giving birth ... so make sure you are 100% ready to do it again- otherwise use some protection.

  • I did Clomid and Baby Aspirin to get pregnant with DD. After she was born we didn't use any protection and I EBF for 3 months. I had 2 periods and was pregnant with this LO!

Just make sure that you are 100% ready to go through pregnancy again. I was shocked that it happened but of course more than happy.

  • I have pcos.  It took us 20 months of trying and b2b iui's w/ follistim to get pg with DS.

I had DS in december and in the end of January i started bcp.  I took them until May when I decide i didnt want to take them anymore.  I tried met for roughly 2 weeks in june and stopped because i didnt like it.

After met i just let nature take its course. I was getting af every 30-35 days since stopping bcp.  My last af was July 7th. I tested on Aug 12th with a bfn.  I figured my body was going back to its old pcos ways of not getting af for months at a time.

On 8/24 i went to the RE to talk about trying for #2 since i wanted to get the prenatal testing out of the way and lose some weight.  I went in on 8/26 to start my prenatal testing and to get blood to see if i ovulated or not so i could take provera to bring af so i could have a HSG again (checking for scar tissue from my c/s).  I got a call the evening of 8/26 thinking they where calling in my provera but the head nurse told me i did infact ovulate and I was roughly 4wks pg.

My LO's will be 16 months apart.  I didnt think i could get pg on my own but wouldnt mind the surprise.  And here I am 16+wk later.

  • We got pg with our first (who just turned 5 yesterday!) after 3 months of trying. I had only had my period twice in 6 months after stopping BCPs. I didn't know at that time that I had PCOS. It was luck, I guess. There was a problem, but we were oblivious to it. 18 months later, we started trying for #2. No period for 3 months, so the Dr. did some b/w and a u/s and that's when I got my dx. I did 4 rounds of Clomid and then three injectible cycles and got pg with our little guy who turned 1 last month. I only had one post partum period when the baby was 10 months old and then--surprise! #3 is on the way. We can't believe it. I know that PCOS is wildly unpredictable. We had discussed having a third, and decided that it would have to happen without help, if it was going to happen at all. I never imagined that it would happen so quickly, without temping, charting or spending endless minutes with my rear propped up on pillows--lol! So if you decide you aren't ready to be pregnant again, use some protection--even if it feels like the most ridiculous thing to do!
  • It took 19 cycles and 2 clomid/IUIs to get pg with my first little guy.  I had hypothyroid and ?blocked tube on HSG (the RE wasn't totally convinced that it was blocked - possibly just narrowed), and DH had low morph (2-3%).  Because of the low morph, we were about to move on to IVF/ICSI because our insurance would have covered it, but our second IUI worked.  Then I BF'ed for 6 months and weaned to TTC again.  I have a strong family history of high FSH and early menopause, and I am 32, so we wanted to get going with treatment again.  I made an RE appointment for October, and waited for my first PP AF after breastfeeding, but it never came.  I was very crampy, so I tested and almost fainted when I got a BFP.  We were very happy, but also a little scared - the 2 will be 15 months apart if all goes well.  Good luck to you!

  • Dx:  DOR - only 3 eggs retrieved with IVF that resulted in #1.

We WERE trying but unmedicated with #2.  First ovulation post weaning.  They're 17 months apart.

I really do think that your first couple of cycles post weaning are super cycles.

Then another 100% shocker pregnancy this summer (that didn't make it).  No clue how that happened.  We had a normal heart beat at first but by the time things were going wrong it was obvious that there were genetic abnormalities.  I'm 38 so sucky eggs strike again!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I have PCOS...DS was a surprise, they are exactly 2 years and 1 week apart.

I got pg the month after I weaned DD. I had 1 period between the two kids.

  • We only needed treatment for our second where we did clomid, IUIs and finally an IVF before getting pregnant.  My husband has 0% morph and I was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve and borderline high FSH.  The doctor told us that we got super lucky with our first and that trying on our own we'd have less than a 4% chance of getting pregnant.  Well, what do doctors know anyway?  We were using birth control for a while after I had my daughter and we stopped figuring nothing would happen anyway (and if it did we'd be happy) and low and behold only two months later I found out that I was pregnant.  So, you just never know.   So long as you're open to more children I say just go for it.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
