I have worked at this same hospital for almost 4 years. About 3 months ago I took a part-time job here with a few more hours and slightly better pay. I was hoping for something FT but I was getting desperate and took the PT position (I was sub-part time before that). It hasn't helped our financial situation as much as we hoped me getting a better job would.
There is a job posting for a full-time position here in the hospital. It probably pays better than here, too. I?m debating applying to it. I know I?ve only been here 3 months and everyone?s really nice but the fact is it really hasn?t improved our financial situation much like I hoped it would, and this would probably do it. Either way, I plan on leaving my employer in a little less than 2 years when I start school full time again.
Thoughts?

Re: WWYD? (Job related)
I would apply.
You have to think of what is best for you and your family - and don't worry - the hospital department won't take it personally!
It doesn't hurt to apply. You may have only been in your current position for 3 months but you have worked at the hospital for 4 years so that is in your benefit. You know your way around and it'll probably be easier for them to train you. In other words, GO FOR IT!!!
Good luck!!

Bah! A complication. Since I have only been here 3 months I can't apply to the other job without my supervisor's approval (6 months is the minimum) and the HR lady told me to check with the supervisor of the other department to make sure it's actually an open position and not just something they made with the intention of moving someone that's already in that department that's supplemental or PT up to FT. Looks like I'll be taking a little walk upstairs later, then maybe talking to my boss.
Oy.

I say go for it, they should understand. You really have to do what is best for you and your family now. Good luck!!
*can* you apply for it? one hospital i used to work at was strict about these things. you had to have been in current position for 6 mos or a year (can't remember) before bidding on another.
would your current boss be able/willing to let you increase your hours, potentially up to FT? that would be my first strategy.
There is a 6 month waiting period, but if my boss allows I can still apply. I'm checking to make sure it's actually an available position (and not something where they plan on moving someone up in the department), THEN I'll talk to my boss about either increasing my hours or approving my application to this other position.

I don't think it would hurt to apply. I think moving from part to full time in this economy is certainly something most employers would understand.
