My baby had a hard time latching onto me in the hospital, so they gave me a nipple shield, which works great for breastfeeding. Now I would like to get her weaned off the nipple shield. When I try to have her feed without the nipple shield, she doesn't recognize the feel of my nipple and won't latch on. Any advice on how to wean off the nipple shield?
Re: Advice on how to wean off nipple shield
A lot of people have the same issue. First off, I would recommend working with a lactation consultant if at all possible. They are a god send!
Here is my experience...same issue as you. My LO would not latch but did great with the nipple shield. When I started to wean off he would get frustrated and cry. I just tried different combinations of methods until one worked. I would start with the shield and then take it off part way. Most of the time he would continue to nurse ok. Then I moved on to trying to get him started without. If he ever got very frustrated I would go back to the shield. I would recommend working on this during the day as at night is probably not the best time for sleepy mom and sleepy baby.
Just keep at it...it will take some time and trial and error but be persistant. Seriously work with a LC if you can. Sometimes I wished that mine lived with me for the first month.
