Preemies

Preemies and teething

When do preemies start teething - their biological age or their adjusted age? Lily has been acting fussy and off for a few days and a lot of my mommy friends say it sounds like teething. She's almost 5 months biologically but less than 2 months adjusted. Thanks!

Re: Preemies and teething

  • I imagine it would be adjusted...

Honestly I wouldn't worry.  My son was an early teether at 9 mos, so you should still have time.

  • i have been wondering this same thing.  stella has not been fussy but she has been chewing on EVERYTHING & drooling.  who knows.  i don't want to get her a sophie the giraffe to chew on because i think she will gag herself with it. :)
  • I swear to you, Robbie started teething about 4 months. Drooling, chewing, you could see the teeth under the skin. Know when they came through? A week before his first b-day. It's a two stage process- first the buds drop in, then they have to work through the skin. The process can happen REALLY early and you may or may not see teeth soon.

  • Lily started teething at about 5.5 months.  She got her first tooth the day she turned 7 months and now has 7 teeth.

  • I thought Andrew was showing signs at 3 months adjusted - maybe he was - his first 2 teeth showed up at 6 months adjusted!
  • Marino started teething at 5 months actual, 3 adjusted. Now, he didn't actually cut a tooth for another 5 months (10 months actual, 8 adjusted). But he was full on teething (fussy, drooling, gnawing on everything) beginning at 5 months. He still only has 5 teeth at 16 months. Its a wonder he can eat all the things he eats (yesterday he ate rice crackers!).
  • ok, my preemie, in addition to being the tallest preemie ever (he was way above the growth chart at his NICU follow-up, making him taller than 100% of babies, which DH of course took to mean he was the tallest preemie baby ever Smile ) also developed teeth WAY earlier than any other baby, preemie or not, that i know.

he started drooling and the whatnot at his 4 month appointment and had 8, yes, 8 teeth by the time he was 9 months old (and it might have been before, i can't remember)!

  • Dr. said K could be teething too.  It's possible!
  • Brandon was a 26 weeker. He started teething when he was 7 months actual, 4 months adjusted but didn't get his first teeth until he was 11 months actual, 8 months adjusted.
Conceived twins with IVF January 2008. Lost baby a at 20 1/2 weeks due to premature rupture of membranes and held onto baby b. Baby b (Brandon) born at 26 weeks and 1 day on July 5, 2008. Wesley born full term on June 29, 2011. My blog http://karenandstu.blogspot.com Lilypie Premature Baby tickers Lilypie Pregnancy tickers image
  • Skylar started to show signs of teething about 3months were now 10months and still no teeth :(

  • My daugter had 4 teeth by 6 months. which is 4 1/2 adjusted. It varies for all children. Personally I think she teethed early even for a non-preemie.

My LO loved her Sophie with a passion. They are just so easy to hold on to and soft on their gums. Give it a whirl.

  • Amaya has been starting to act like her gums are bothering her about a month ago, at 3 months adjusted. No signs of teeth, though, and probably not for a while.

What's Lily doing when she's acting fussy? I sometimes get the feeling that many moms of normal "easy"  term babies seem to be blaming any and all fussing on teething, it seems :) Our LOs were still very fussy at your LOs age (still are, actually). That probably doesn't help, but at least you're not alone :)
