Infertility

new with questions- longish

I am new (almost 6 months) to the TTC process in general, which I am well aware is nothing compared to what you ladies have been through and am here seeking your advice on issues I have been having. Little background- off BCP in July after 11 years, prior to going on had extremely heavy periods, although they were fairly regular. Since being off, I have yet to have a natural AF. I did take Provera after a 80 + day cycle and got AF after that. I am now back on CD 31, with no sign of O (I am charting and have read TCOYF). I got some basic labs done, thyroid, LH, prolactin and FSH by my regular OB- all normal.

Per my OB, the next step is to go see her the beginning of January for further workup- I am assuming Provera again, U/S to check for PCOS and probably Clomid as I have not O'd. Based on my insurance, I can go see an RE also anytime I want with a referral from my PCP. I have read lots of stories here of the dangers of Clomid, monitoring etc getting at an OB vs an RE. Based on your experiences, do you think I should just go straight to the RE and bypass the next OB visit since it seems as if I am headed in this direction anyway? I just don't want to go to the OB in January for her to tell me to go to an RE or to have to restart this process with a whole new MD.  Second- did any of you experience this complete lack of O for so long after BCP, if so what was the diagnosis made, did you eventually O on your own?

Thank you for your time answering this, I know 5 months is nothing really, I am just starting to get so frustrated and so sad about my body pretty much doing nothing and am hoping some of you can provide some guidance. I feel better about this whole situation when I know I am being proactive and making the most informed choices heading towards some answers. Thanks again really

  • I did my initial tests with my OB because she does the basic monitoring on clomid and I didn't have to wait to get in to see her.  I regret that now because I don't feel I got enough info from my OB's office and wish I has just gone ahead and moved to an RE.  If you don't have to wait for a referral and insurance is covering it, I say go ahead to the RE.  I have the same situation as you with heavy AF prior to BC, and no AF for 6 months after.  Good luck!

  • I don't have ovulation issues and was never on clomid but I say you should go straight to an RE.  If you don't have to wait for a referral or insurance coverage, then why not?  Good luck.
  • I would go ahead and see an RE too. They are the experts in infertility! Good luck

  • I would say go with the RE too.  They may run some additional testing for you. It sounds like you have done alot of research on your own and I think you will find every lady on here will  tell you to be leery of an OB who will prescribe Clomid without a full fertility workup.

    Good Luck to you!

  • It took me full year after stopping depo provera to ovulate (and I did so on my own on cd37).  I had 5 months of anovulatory cycles prior to that (longest was 55 days so no provera).  I mentioned to my OB at my annual in aug. that I was approaching the one year mark and she referred me to an RE and said they'd repeat any tests she did so it made more sense to move on.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • If I were you, I would go to an RE instead of your OB. I felt like my ob/gyn wasn't really listening to my problems and she put me on BCP for a few months to help regulate my cycles even though I told her when I stopped taking them I didnt get a period for a very long time. So of course when I went off them, again I didnt get a period. So I just decided to go to an RE and that was the best choice for me. My RE has been amazing and so much more knowledgable than my OB/GYN. Also, I was diagnosed with PCOS & prescribed Prometrium to bring on my period and I will soon be starting Metformin. If I don't get pregnant, then I will start Clomid at the beginning of next year. Good luck!

  • I don't think you mention your age- but if you did I missed it. If you are older (35, some say 30) I would recommend starting with RE right away (after 6 months). In any case, it sounds like you have some real concerns, and a lot of OBs will make you wait and wait, because they aren't comfortable handling infertility cases.  At least schedule a consult with RE- you can always remain with OB if you decide to...
  • Thank you all so much for your responses, I will take your advice and go see the RE. I am not over 35- I called the insurance today to be sure, they said its all covered after my deductible, which I have to pay no matter when I go. I may as get the referral and just start with the RE. Thank you all again, I will learn from your experiences and just start with the RE.
  • Hi!  I'm in a similar situation.  I went off of birth control at the end of May after 4 years and have not yet had a natural AF.  I had one off of birth control.  I saw my OBGYN in late August and she put me on Prometrium for 10 days and I had 3 days of bleeding.  My OBGYN ran some basic blood tests that all came back normal and told me that based on my past history, she thought I had PCOS (before BCP, I had very irregular periods, when they did come, they were very heavy).  I did not feel like I was getting all the information that I wanted to get and didn't need a referral for insurance.  After lots of advice from others, I went to see an RE.  I just got done with another round of Provera and baseline bloodwork.  I have an HSG next Monday, my husband has an SA scheduled and then we'll see from there. The RE thinks I probably have PCOS as well, but we are waiting for the tests to all come back.  I will go back on BCP for a couple months to regulate things and get through the holidays and then we'll probably start Clomid w/ Ovidrel and monitoring in January.  I would definitely suggest going to an RE!  After going to our RE, I felt so relieved to get more information and have a "plan of action".  I left feeling much more informed than when I left my OB's office, and I am so glad I went!  Good luck with everything!

  • Thank you all again, Its so nice to hear other people with the same experience and not feel so alone. Its so hard with all my friends getting BFP's the first month off the pill and hearing them tell me to stop stressing:(
