Pregnant after a Loss

Whats with all the inductions?

When I read a lot of posts on the boards I am so surprised about the number of inductions.  Anyone I know has not been induced until at least 41 weeks unless there is a medical indication (eg. low fluid).  On the boards it seems like many women are induced at 38/39 weeks. I know from research that pitocin has risks - eg. fetal distress and jaundice are more common in babies that have been induced. Does anyone else think this is crazy?

Re: Whats with all the inductions?

  • My OB suggested induction to me at my 39 wk appt and scheduled it for 4 days post EDD (fortunately, DD came the day before that). I've been surprised at how many doctors are scheduling for 38/39 wks, but I'm assuming the inductions are generally happening at more like 40 wks. At least I hope that's the case- unless it was medically necessary, I think I'd be skeptical if my dr. suggested it for pre-EDD.

  • I have done some reading on it and was not in favor of it unless I go WAY over my DDate....but today the doc said if they can't get my bp and protein levels down that we will have to talk about that on Friday....so I am going to be using my time on bedrest;) tomorrow to look into it more since I may seriously be faced with it...I have heard their are risks, but I wonder if when they are doing it the benefits outweigh the risk (esp for the women on here with stillborns in the past or other issues that make it more beneficial to go ahead and get the baby out....)
  • I would never argue against it for medical reasons - just seems like some are having it because they are tired and frustrated with waiting. I've always expected that I'd go over with my first - maybe even over 41 weeks. Full term is 40 weeks and most dates are off by a few days so why sweat a few days over?

  • I was induced at 39 weeks...it was a great experience! I was having major reflux problems and wasnt able to keep anything down so thats why I was induced but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Fast labor and no complications. I guess it also helped that I started labor the night before but I dont see a problem with being induced if you have already made some progress on your own.

  • I left my doctor because he wanted to induce at 39 weeks just because he is a solo practice and wants to have a schedule. If you are having issues or there are special circumstances, that I think it is fine to be induced as long as you are close to 39 weeks. My sister was induced and had a horrible and painful labor and I know a few others who have said the same.

  • I would never ever induce before my due date and I'm very hesitant to do it at all, but it looks like something I might be facing if I don't go into labor on my own before next week.  Even then, I'm only agreeing to do it because I had a growth u/s that shows an already 8 lb baby as of a week ago. This could mean baby is only 7 lb, but it could also mean 9 lbs and growing! Scary...Anyway, many people I've found are getting induced for convenience and to me the risks are just not worth it.

  • If you have a doctor you trust, then to me it's not an issue. My doc said last week she has me scheduled for an induction 2 days prior to my due date in case I don't have baby on my own before then. For me, she doesn't want me to go beyond my due date because of my age, history of infertility and the fact that LO has started measuring a tad behind - so she doesn't want to risk IUGR or other problems with my other issues/history. I really didn't want to be induced either, but I trust my doctor and if she thinks its best for my baby then that's what I'll do (still hoping he decides to pick his own birthday before then though). My sister was induced around 38 weeks due to age and GD and her experience was awesome just like mrsandrews was - 12 hours from start to finish and it went like clockwork. I don't believe in inductions simply for convenience, but there are in fact legitimate reasons for them and they are not always a bad experience for the mom (or baby).
