Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Choroid Plexus cysts: Anyone have experience with them?

Just got back from our big u/s. We are officially team Pink!  The u/s tech didn't mention anything bad to us when we were in the u/s room. She said that things looked fine so DH and I were excited!  However, when I went into the dr's office for my appointment he came in and said, "So how are you feeling about the cysts?"  UMMmmmm, What??????  Apparently the u/s showed some cysts called choroid plexus cysts on the baby's brain. I pretty much just lost it right there. I went from being on cloud 9 to having awful feeling in my stomach. I am just sooo tired of having something to worry about you know? Dr. says that they might see a baby with them about once a month and that they commonly go away on their own but that we will have to have a level 2 u/s done next week to make sure that's what they are and to see if they can find any other deformities. I guess these cysts are sometimes associated with Trisomy 18 is what I've read so far???  We of course are hoping and praying that they go away by third tri which he said that most do, but it's going to be a long wait until we find out. Until then, please keep up in your thoughts and prayers that they go away for our little girl.  Thanks!!

If you or anyone you know has had experience with these before, please let me know!

  • our 2o week u/s showed what could have been cysts in the brain, our Dr. said this is a soft marker for downs, so we did the quad screen and a level 2 u/s and everything came back clear. Sure enough our daughter was born healthy with no problems. They sometimes read to far into everything they see.  Don't worry. on the bright side you can use the level 2 u/s to get another look at your little girl!

  • same thing happened to us.  I'm holding my perfect, healthy, normal baby girl right now.  Don't let them stress you out, most likely they're nothing.  :)
  • Our U/S tech noticed this at 20 wks for us too.  They explained that since U/S technology is much more advanced now, these cysts are picked up with a higher frequency than ever before.  Therefore, they are now considered to be very common and not necessarily an indicator that something is "wrong".  DH and i requested a follow up U/S a month later to see if they were still there or had grown in size.  A month later they were completely gone!  Hang in there, it's not as bad as it may seem .
  • Number one stop looking on google! i know it will be hard but all it is doing is feeding every fear you have! DH came home to me bawling one day and took my computer away! We had to go see a specialist and they made me do the quad marker test etc.  while @ the specialist we found out Kam had dilated kidneys too.  So of course I was freaking out.  By 35 weeks the cysts were gone and his kidneys were fine as well. I remember them saying they normally go away by 28 wks...but when we went @ that time they actually found another cyst, so don't loose hope if that happens to you as well.  Good luck! and I'm sure every thing will be fine!!!
