I know variantions of this have been posted before.. but I was just presented with an upcoming situation that has got me stumped as to how I can avoid drinking or spilling the beans....
so .. after every quarter end at work our cao throws a "beer blast" .. basically he buys a couple of kegs and gets the whole finance dept together to celebrate. well... I haven't been sick so I dont think the "I'm on medication" excuse will work. and it will definitely look weird if I take a bottle of water instead of a filling up a cup with beer. not that I'm a huge drinker.. but I'll at least have one during these events usually. and.. to top it off.. a lot of our department who work remotely.. happen to be in town this week and will still be around for the festivities. Ugh. so I am going to either look like the party pooper.. or... one of my co-workers might make a comment after they have a couple! I already think my boss is suspicious b/c I've had to leave early/come in late for a few doc appts already.
the best I got is saying that my stomach isn't feeling well that day... or trying to cut out early.. but that would probably be noticed.
Suggestions? TIA!

Ditto. Keg cups are easy, too. Just fill it with lots of foam and then let it settle. It will look like you drank most of your cup.
The medication excuse could still work....since there are other meds that you can't drink with that doesn't necessarily mean you're sick.
I'll drink ginger ale with a splash of cranberry...no one notices....but I don't really think that is an option with a keg!
Or you can always say that you have an appointment after work so you can only stay a bit and you're not able to drink before hand.....something along those lines.
If there is an opportunity to hold the beer and randomly pour some out from time to time...that could work too.
It's such a sticky situation. I feel your pain....GL!
I would use the meds excuse... don't have to seem sick to pull that one. A common ear infection wouldn't keep you out of work but would be enough to put you on a no-alcohol medicine. Just a simple, "Oh, I'm on an antibiotic so the doctor says I shouldn't" should be enough. If anyone is rude enough to press for more details, then you have the right to be offended and tell them off. :-)
Say you've had a headache all day or that you have to get up early the next day.
Why does it matter anyway? It's no one's business why you're not drinking. Are your co-workers really going to say something to you? If so, that's pretty immature.
No excuses, I just order a cranberry juice and soda with lime directly from the bartender and tell anyone who asks that it's a vodka cranberry. Or I'll just do a soda water with lime and claim it's a vodka tonic. Just tell the bartender to put it in the same glass that he would put the alcoholic version in.
But be careful. I was with friends last weekend and set my drink down next to one of my friend's drinks--who really was drinking a vodka tonic. I accidentally picked hers up and took a sip before I realized what I'd done!
Oops, I just realized this wasn't an option for you. I say fill your glass and just not drink from it.I once used "I just took Tylenol for a headache and I shouldn't mix."
I'm actually planning on doing just that on saturday for a trip to the wineries with friends, watered down apple juice could pass for wine I hope!
I'd say you are going to a wine bar w/friends later and don't want to mix..or something like that. IF they wouldn't follow up.
My BFP Chart~
Your best bet is going to be either an anitbiotic excuse or just filling a glass and slowly dumping out out. You also might want to make sure that someone sees you fill your glass more than once if you are doing the dump out method. Makes it look more realistic. Also putting the cup to your lips and letting the beer touch your lips while not taking a drink looks good too. Thats what I did for the champaine toast at my brothers wedding.
Don't let the people who say "Why do they care" or "If they are really friends they wouldn't ask" get on your nerves.
I had 3 or 4 drinking events, including my brothers wedding, that I had to "lie" about drinking during.
Best of luck!!!
I work with a young group of people, and before I told anyone when we'd go out to bars I used the "I have to drive right after this" excuse a lot. Maybe get your one drink & hold it/dump it, like PPs suggested, but make sure to mention that you have to leave at X o'clock to go pick up (DH, your mom, your cat, dry cleaning...anything!) and it's a drive that you don't want to have to do if you've had a couple.
That gives you an excuse to not stick around forever (somehow I can't see having a ton of fun at a beer blast you can't drink at!), and someone has to be a real asss to try to guilt you into having more than you're comfortable with before you drive. HTH!
Everything is so exciting when you're one!
The diet/exercise excuse works for me too. I actually have turned down alcohol at social gatherings in the past because "i didn't get in my workout this morning, so I'm hitting the treadmill when I get home - ugh". Just say you're doing 30 Day Shred or something and for one month you're abstaining.
Or just hold a cup of beer and nobody will be the wiser. If there is hard alcohol tonic water and lime works. I was "out" at our halloween party and was drinking that, and I had a few shocked people asking me "what are you DRINKING?" thinking I was pregnant and boozing it up.
This!
I've posted an answer to these several times before.... I'm not into lying, or "excuses". It should be enough to simply say "No, thanks".
i'm no good at lying. so i would just tell them i was pregnant. lol. but i also don't keep things in easy. with charlie, i told everyone i was pregnant at 11 DPO. this time, i was 3 weeks along when i found out and told everyone. i think it's easier to just say, "eh, the doctors seem to think drinking while pregnant is a bad idea" and wait to see how long they take to react.
but that's just me.
