Non-spankers..do you think spanking would be considered a sin?

I had this crazy dream that I was working on a thesis about spanking being a sin in the eyes of God...this is something I've never thought before. It just got me thinking and wondering if anyone felt this way. I have no clue where the dream came from- I'm not working on a thesis, and I never thought about spanking being a sin before...and I don't even know if it is. I know many in the Christian world believe it's the primary form of discipline, so I doubt I'd get any answers at church, haha.

  • Abusing = yes

A little swat on the butt b/c your child ran out into the middle of the street = no

  • interesting dream. :-)

I did a huge paper for my poli sci undergrad about the nature of God in terms of capital punishment. Those who believe in the Old Testament "eye for an eye" God would be all gung ho for capital punishment, but those who saw God in terms of hippy-let's all be friends-bring the little children to me-sandal-wearing- Jesus would be against capital punishment.

The same may go for spanking. At least you dream! I don't sleep much with 2U2.

LOL- true dat. I'm much more a hippy Jesus fan, but I do see and understand the relavence of the judgement God poured out- it just stays in the old testament for a reason.

Sorry you're not sleeping much. Are you still nursing? I'll be having 2u2 soon enough- and now I'm scared, haha.

  • Yes and I strongly believe that all spankers are headed straight to hell.

Are you serious? That's fine if you think that- but you sound so..serious that it almost seems sarcastic...just curious.

  • I won't talk about my view on spanking, but I do not think it is a sin.  Abuse... yes... but spanking would be a no.

I am nursing! I hope to stick with it for as long as I can. You will do fine with 2U2. I've just gotten used to more crying. You just have to figure out whose needs are most important, handle theirs first and go from there.  You haven't found out sex of baby yet right?

Yes, the God of the OT and the Jesus of the NT are VERY different people.

Good for you! I hope nursing works out as long as you guys are both happy with it. Thanks for the encouragement! No, we're going to wait until he/she is born to find out!! :)

No I am not serious...at all.  I was hoping it was obvious that it was oozing with sarcasm.  Guess not!  And actually, I don't even really believe in hell.

  • I think if it's done right (not out of anger, not with the intent to hurt the child, etc.) then absolutely not. I think acting out of anger could be. We're firmly in the no spanking camp, but close friends of ours spank and I think they are amazing parents. If you want a good giggle though, go to biblegateway.com and search the NLT for the verse about spanking. I usually love that translation, but that verse made me roll my eyes.

Which verse about spanking? Prov. 23:13? The NLT is pretty close to KJV on that one...

Okay- that's what I thought, but since I don't "know" you very well, I was thinking maybe you could have some serious views on spanking, haha.

God and Jesus are the same person. If you read John 1:1, Jesus was there in the beginning.

  • I don't believe in spanking but it isn't for religious reasons. Although I do believe it teaches kids to solve their problems with violence which seems sin-like I suppose.

I don't think you understood what I meant. Hmm
