Babies: 3 - 6 Months

baby cereal

Just wondering if any of you started your DC on cereal at 3 months, and if so, did they do well with it? I know they have to learn to to eat from a spoon and all that but DS didn't start on cereal till 5 months. Formula doesn't seem to be enough for DD anymore. We are trying to hold off until she's at least 4 months but I feel like I'm starving her.

Re: baby cereal

  • We started at 4 months.  4-6 it's the recommended age. I'd wait a few more weeks.

  • Sounds like she's going through the 3 moth growth spurt and that's why she sees extra hungry.  If you're looking to start solids that early I would  consult your ped  Mine said nothing before 6 months although some do say 4 months.

  • Your LO probably needs more to drink, not solids.

  • We started trying a little bit of cereal at 3mo 1 wk since she is already at 40 oz a day and pedi said to give it a shot. We try once a day (maybe have done it 4 or 5 days) she will take maybe a quarter sized amount. She is young so I will wait til after her 4 mo appt to talk about giving it to her more than once a day if I see her getting the hang of it or adding fruits and veggies.
  • If it's a growth spurt she may need more formula or more feedings... just for a few days or so.  I wouldn't start cereal w/o pedi's recommendation.  At first, cereal isn't for EATING, it's for TEACHING.  She wont be getting a substantial amount of food to keep her satisfied. More of it will end up on her clothes than in her stomach.
