3rd Trimester

Those of you with cats...

Does yours seem to think that the crib is their new bed??  Our Rascal thinks so and can jump straight into the crib from the floor.  This worries me and once the bedding is washed I don't want him in there.  We can close the door but the room gets so cold then :(.  Any suggestions?

Re: Those of you with cats...

  • Foil works beautifully!

As soon as we set up the PNP, both of our cats hopped right in--one in the bassinet, one in the changer (it was actually really cute--I need to upload the photo!). I shooed them out and lined the entire thing with foil. One of them jumped in again and flew about 5 feet in the air as soon as his paws hit the foil....and he hasn't gone near the thing since.

We also have the crib and changing pad covered in foil for the time being. No cats on anything for now!

  • they do sell a net that you can buy that will go over the crib - keeps kids in & pets out.  it kinda looks like a done - it has a zipper so you can access LO easily.  We have a gate on LO's room door & our cats (we have 5) don't even try to scale it....although this is a room they were never given free access to even when it was just an office.

Good luck - I'm sure your LO & furbabies will co-exist nicely

  • My cat has been doing this with the pack n play (it is in our room). I covered it with a sheet. It is not the prettiest thing, but if she gets in it, she lays on the sheet. When LO comes we will have to start closing the door.
  • For the small price of $50 you can buy a crib tent that is advertised as being practically for this very reason :( We are not allowing cats in room or anywhere around baby so we didn't buy the crib tent, but we will eventually be purchasing the playard tent that is available because our cats do not understand that not everything is theirs. Sorry not much more help, I am in same boat as you. You might just have to do what we do for now and keep a spray bottle handy and sleep with one eye open. Of course our cats will not back away unless we actually spray which gets the crib and sheets wet and anything else in the proximity...*sigh*
  • I am not worried, they don't get past our "guard" dog - our extremely loyal Skye Terrier mix. He doesn't let them in our room (where our crib will be).

  • We used foil, but as soon as we took it out they jumped in again.  You have to be very careful once your LO gets here.  We do not let the cats in whichever room he is sleeping (which is ours now).  Cats are cuddly and sometimes will lay on a baby's face.

I know this sounds stupid, but you could change the door to your nursery to a screen door.  That will keep the cats out, but let warm air from the rest of the house in.

Also, how cold does it really get?  The ideal temp to prevent SIDS is 67-70.  IMO that feels cold, but that is what we keep our house now.  We put socks on Henry's hands to keep them warm and just dress him in a lightweight sleeper.

  • It may sound weird, but we installed a nice wooden screen door.  DH got the idea from one of his customers.  The cats can't get in, but can see everything that is going on, so they don't make a big fuss about it.  And we will be able to check on the baby without always having to open the door.

  • Some people might not like this, but try a squirt gun with water in it. If you see him in the crib, squirt him. That way, he'll associate the crib with something he doesn't like (i.e. getting squirted) and maybe he'll leave it alone. However, this might not work with all cats. If you have one like ours (a siamese) then he won't give a crap if he is squirted and will continue to do whatever he wants!
  • Foil did not work on my cat, he LOVED the foil, thought it was an awesome crinkly toy just for him.  Confused

Right now the carseat and a few other large items are sitting in the crib and the bouncer is full of toy cars, LOL.  I'm counting on the kitties not liking the baby and not wanting to be near him.  If that doesn't work, I don't know what I'll do.  Train the dog to keep herding the cats away from the baby??  Wink

ETA: We also tried turning the vibrations and music on while kitty was sleeping in the bouncer and he love love LOVED the vibration.  It was hysterical but not very helpful.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

    Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • Put foil in the crib before LO arrives.  After the cat jumps on that once, they're likely not to do it again....
  • our cat has made the pack n play bassinet her dream bed.  I haven't had the heart to turn on the music/vibrator yet and put foil to keep her out.  I will eventually and odds are once the baby is here she will not want to be anywhere near the crying.

  • My kitty hasn't been interested in getting into the crib or cradle. He just wanders around the base of both and rubs up against them.

  • Well our cats got into our crib once and we sprayed them with the water bottle and they really arent too fond of the crib now. But one thing that we are considering is a motion activated sprayer that whenever the cats cross it, it sprays a mist of water (i believe its water) and it eventually trains them. Also for our pack n play, we sprayed a towel with kitty repellant and layed it over the top. They hopped in once but havent been in since. We have 2 siamese (just like the 2 from Lady & the Tramp-extra nosey & noisey) and they do run the rest of the house, so we will see what happens once our little guy gets here...
  • One of our kitties loves the cradle (pretty much just sleeps in there now), and one really likes the crib.  Charles is going to be sleeping in the cradle in our room at night, and we'll have the door closed so no kitties can get in at night.  He's going to nap in his crib during the day, when we can supervise the kitty access.

I'm really not worried about anything bad happening.  The kitties are as much a part of our family as the boy will be.  We are going to be very careful and supervise all contact between the boy and the kitties... I refuse to get freaked out by it.

I totally use the squirt bottle to stop my cats from doing naughty things. I also read if you put a little vinegar or lemon juice in the water it is especailly effective. Honestly these days we mostly just have to shake the water bottle in their direction and they stop what they are doing. But it hasn't permanently deterred any of my cats from anything.

Personally I would invest in the tent if you are not wanting to keep the door closed.

Your kitties are super cute. I love Siamese cats, they are such characters.

  • My cat is 12 and can hardly jump on our bed let alone jump that high to get in the crib.
  • Foil and the squirt gun work for us. After LO is here DH and I (and the kids) will be diligent on checking the crib and change table whenever baby isn't in there just in case. When LO is in the crib the door will be closed, when LO is in the P&P, one of us will be beside them. GL with everything

Same here until I got a changing pad cover in place.  He ignored the room for 2 months until the day that showed up.  Foil went on immediately and he can't stand it.  He's tried jumping on it three times to test it out and gets scared right off every time.  If you foil now you'll have time to train him before LO arrives.

  • You can also try filling the crib (or whatever) with blown up balloons.  If they jump in there, they'll likely pop one and it'll freak 'em out and they'll stay away.

  • My cats love foil and don't care if they get sprayed. They're weird...

So in our case, in the crib, I have posterboard with sticky tape all over it. They hate getting their paws stuck in anything and will stay away from it. I am going to do the same in the Pack N Play, 'cause that will look more like a "box" to them, which they love.

At first, I'm sure they'll steer clear of the baby though. They don't like crying, funny smelling creatures with thrashing arms.
