Anyone elses midwife/OB not having you do kick counts?

I had my 29 week appointment last Thursday and my midwife brought up how often I should be feeling kicks but when I asked about doing kick counts she said not to worry about them just to call if I noticed decreased movement or anything under 3 kicks in an hour when I was laying down and would normally feel them.

I found this a little odd but this is my first so I'm not really sure, anyone else not doing kick counts?

Re: Anyone elses midwife/OB not having you do kick counts?

  • Mine has never mentioned anything about kick counts.  She just asks if I have noticed and changes in movement and said if I did, that I should call.

  • Nope, I've never done them and OB has never mentioned it.  She's never quiet for too long!!! :)

  • mine told me not to worry about it unless i haven't felt any movement for a while.
  • My OB never said anything to me about doing them.  I started doing it but I could never do it at the same time of day and he's so active that I just pay attention.  If I haven't felt him in awhile, I'll just try to get him moving again.

  • I've had two pregnancies with two different doctors and was never asked to do a single "kick count."
  • They have never mentioned to me about doing kick counts, I brought it up and was told as long as I feel her 10 times a day. I think the reasoning is, soon to be moms freak out when doing kick counts if they don't feel them however many times an hour especially towards the end when things start to slow down. All baby's are different and have different patterns. My LO moves a lot but I've gone an hour without feeling her and I know she is ok.

  • My midwife has never mentioned doing kick counts, but she does ask me about LO's movement at every appointment. She knows that I'm aware enough of my body and my LO's usual activity that I'd notice a decrease in movement and would call.

  • Nope. He asks if she is getting more active everytime I see him but has never mentioned anything about kick counts.

  • I wasn't told to do actual counts, just that a red flag shoudl go up if I hadn't felt anything in a day.

  • Mine never mentioned it, just said to let them know if I noticed changes in movement.

  • I think kick counts is a bump-thing.  Mine just asks me if baby is still moving.

  • My OB said they are not neccesary and can sometimes cause worry when it's not needed. I have no clue how many times she kicks me in a day - but I've definitely noticed if it's been less than normal.

  • Mine never said anything about it . . then again he also said that my baby was the most active baby he had seen in all 30 years he has been practicing.

  • Mine does ask that I do kick counts. something like 12 kicks in 10 hours. (with my preggo brain i may have that backward) anyway, i think its better just calling in if youve noticed decreased movement, because i have never been able to keep up with the number of kicks.
  • Mine has never mentioned it at all. Just asked about the baby's general activity level.

  • No kick counts for me.  They just ask if he's moving okay.
  • Mine told me not to do them because it would drive me, DH, and her crazy.  She said that like the rest of us, babies in utero have less active times and times when they're sleeping, and because of that kick counts may make me worried for no reason.  She just said to pay attention to the general pattern of movement and call her if I noticed a marked decrease.

  • Nope, I was told if I noticed a decrease in movement to give them a call. My OB asks about movement at each appointment and will try to get LO to kick at her a couple times.

Nope. Not just a bump thing. With DS my OB had me do kick counts on a regular basis, if I recall like the last 6 weeks? I actually had to chart it on a form that she gave me and bring it in every appointment to show her.

I have a new OB this time around and they also have the "kick count sheet" but she said that it's more like a guideline.. and as long as i feel movement to not worry and that if I feel like it's decreased then just drink water or eat something and lay down, relax and start counting..

not true. I know in AZ midwives have to give you a kick count sheet.

  • ditto PP, mine just asks if baby is moving.
  • I'm not at all! And have not been told to. I just kind of keep an eye on the movement and make sure there are no majjor changes. I also listen to his heartbeat every night using a cheapy monitor we bought at BRU and that's always fun and reassuring!

This for me.  I would have made myself crazy if I would have had to do them.  I figure as long as he's consistently moving, all is good.

    Me too.

  • My OB has never even mentioned paying attention to how much activity or to take counts. They just ask if baby is active- same amt, decrease, etc. So I wouldnt worry.
