midwife ok for twins?

i had planned to go to a midwife practice that is supervised by ob/gyns and has an associated mfm but that was before i knew we were having twins. i am not going to be released from my re for at least 3-4 weeks but if that practice isn't going to work for us i  would like to do some research into an appropriate one.

Re: midwife ok for twins?

  • My midwife said she couldn't help me and referred me back to the OB group.

I really wanted a midwife and the whole concept of a midwife. It just didn't work out that way for me with the twins. And in hindsight considering how difficult my vaginal birth was for both me & the delivering ob's (yup there was two in there---conversing on how best to handle the situation) I'm glad I didn't have the midwife.

If there's a next time and if it's a singleton pregnancy I'm all about the midwife.

  • I was interested in going the midwife route too, but with twins that thought quickly went out the window.  I went with the OBs, but even then, my care was really managed by a perinatologist.  Sure, an OB (and a midwife) did my c-section, but only when the peri said it needed to be done. ;-)

  • I'd call and ask...since they have OBs and an associated mfm they may take twins.

  • No, twins are high-risk. I would research an ob and a perinatologist to monitor your pregnancy.

ETA: I would post this question on the Multiples Board as the ladies there can give you more feedback.

  • Midwives will generally only see low-risk patients and twins are automatically high risk. I got booted from my MW with my first pregnancy as soon as I developed pre-e and it was actually kind of traumatizing to suddenly have a new doctor managing my care. I'd definitely go with an OB or, better yet, just see the MFM.
