Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Jumperoo warning

I was literally yelled at by my mother, who is a pediatric physical therapist, for buying the Jumperoo for L for Christmas. I suppose she might have had a point so i figured I would share.

If your using a Jumperoo then you should limit your LO's use to no more then 10 minutes at a time for no more then 3 times a day. If you LO is spending more time then that, they are at a higher risk for have a gross motor development delay or tone issues. If your LO does not meet the age requirements, they should NOT be using it. One of the big problems with this is that moms of 2-3 month old babies are putting them in it and there muscles are too immature and its simply not ok. These babies have an even higher rate of delay and tone problems. I think the main problem is that the baby is weight bearing and babies less then 6 months of age should not weight bear. The instructions say you should be using for a child that young anyway, so I guess none of you are, just a PSA

I figured she might be a little too partial, given that its her granddaughter in question, so I asked the pedi. and she said the same thing. Her instructions "Dont even buy one, they shouldnt even be made" and then she went on her speal about the same issues.

Just a heads, up if use one then be careful about how often your putting LO in it.

  • Yea they said this at some baby seminar I went to, also that it can cause bowleggedness. But I think that this would be in extreme cases where moms use it as a babysitter all day long. I think discretionary use for a little break or entertainment for an hour or two a day is no biggie. But I'm sure they've seen all kinds of problems at pedis/OT's from parents that literally have the baby living in these things all day long.

These were my thoughts.  Obviously there would be issues if the baby was left in them all day long, as I am sure many not so great parents do.

But I doubt its any biggy at all for a couple hours a day.  My friend's 2-year-old, jumperoo survivor is a testiment to no damage done....he runs around like crazy.

  • My DD LOVED hers. She didnt have any issues (walked 1 week after her 1st b-day) no damage done. It really was one of her favorite toys.

I do think that moderation is the biggest thing. Obviously a few times a day wont do anything, or very little. I still think that 2 hours is kind of "babysitting". Even if its broken up, thats a lot of babies day spent in that thing.

For every success story I am sure there is someone who has to go through several sessions of PT to correct these issues. Im glad, of course, that your friend had no issues. I would just hate for anyones LO to have to go to PT because they spent too much time in one.

  • Just like anything there are no issues if you use it in moderation and follow the directions.  DS loved his Jumperoo and he definitely doesn't have any issues from it whatsoever.  We didn't put him in there too soon and we didn't leave him in there for long periods of time, just like the saucer.

I highly doubt a jumper or exercauser can ever be blamed for a child's need of physical therapy. They're certainly not a good idea  for kids who are already showing gross motor delays, or have hip issues- but, moderate use by a healthy child with normal development is fine.

Gabe was tripodding by 3m, and sitting extremely well by 4m- we had no qualms about putting him his jumperoo for a few minutes several days a week at 5m and he LOVED that thing. My niece has since loved it to the point of destruction, so we're getting another for Gwen.

Gabe was walking at 10m and running by his first birthday.

There are reasons to be careful, of course- and they aren't for every child- but, our experience with them is great. ;)

You would be surprised, like I said before.

    Its just a heads up.

Was your mom's opinion only for the jumperoo, or also for the exersaucer?  We have an exersaucer but I was thinking of trading it in for a jumperoo before I open it, did she have a different opinion of them, or the same for both?
