2nd Trimester

Drinking wine in the 2nd trimester

I asked my doctor about this and she said that a glass of wine every now and then would not be a big deal. Red wine specifically (don't know what the difference is). I have also heard this from friends of mine as well.

Has anyone else heard this?

Re: Drinking wine in the 2nd trimester

  • Pregnant friend did it. I however, am not taking any chances. That is just a personal choice.

  • When I went through the tri's with DD it was very common for ladies to have a glass every now and then.
  • I've heard it straight from my docs mouth. And I've done it a couple times.

  • yep... i heard it too... in fact, due to some personal stuff going on i'm choosing to have my glass of red wine now
  • Yes, I have heard of this.  I have not done it because of two reasons:

    1)  It seems pointless to me to open a bottle of wine for one glass and then have the rest of the bottle go to waste.

     2)  I don't want to go to a restaurant, have a glass of wine and have people look at me funny or with mean looks.  I'm self conscious enough sitting at a bar with my mocktail.

     3)  The only time I really miss wine is when I've had a bad day, and I don't trust myself to have one glass of wine and not two on those days.

  • yes its common
  • I was told by my dr. that it was ok.  She also said, when her mom was pg with her sis, she went into pre-term labor and her dr. told her to drink a glass of wine a night to stop it.  Maybe that is why they suggest red???
  • Sure, I've heard of it!  I honestly don't think I could drink a full glass of wine right now without falling all over myself.
  • Okay, Phew. I must confess. Our friends brought over a bottle of extremely good red wine (I think it was a merlot, but not sure) tonight to have with dinner. I'm not normally a red wine drinker, BUT I had a full glass and it was very tasty. :-)
  • My mom did it and I turned out fine. My MIL is a nurse midwife and she said that I should do it once in a while especially when I am feeling stressed.
  • Good to hear. I know my Doc says no.. but I think they are just sticking on the safe side of things. I had 1/3 of a glass the other night, and felt a little guilty about it. I will definitely partake again at some point :)

  •  I had a few glasses of wine during the last half of my first pregnancy, and I imagine I will with this one as well. Haven't yet though...

I am a bit uneasy with the general idea of alcohol in the second trimester. From what I understand it is a matter of specific developmental milestones that the fetus achieves after which the occasional drink becomes much less of a risk. After 16w the fetus has reached a state of development where it is significantly less sensitive to medicines and toxins (like alcohol) to which the mother may be exposed.

Sorry to get all technical about it, but in this instance I think the difference between having a drink at 13w vs. 17w does actually matter.  Especially if one were to take the liberty past the occasional drink, you know?

  • Have some vino!  I do from time to time.Big Smile I think red wine has some special antioxidant that can extend your life, but you have to take the antioxidant in pure form... not with booze for it to really work.
  • I had maybe 2-3 small glasses of wine during my last pregnancy. One time it was even recommended by one of the OB's at my practice -- I had gone to L&D (I think it was late second tri?) with regular contractions and after they got them stopped, he recommended going home and having a little wine to further relax my body.

I had a few sips of champagne the other night to toast a friend's wedding; that's it so far this pregnancy. I may have a glass of wine at some point, I may not.

  • Yes, I've heard this.  Personally I would love to have an occasional glass of wine, but even having a sip of DH's gives me heartburn.  Crying

  • I was told the same thing by a Dr and a Midwife. I had my first 1/3 glass of wine the other night, and plan on a full glass for the holidays. Nothing extreme, but I believe a glass of red (more antioxidants, heart healthy, all that good stuff) every once in a while is fine.

  • I have heard this as well. I know many women who do drink one or two glasses a week and their LO's are fine. Personally while I am PG I don't really have the desire for wine so its not an issue.
  • My sis had fetal alcohol syndrome so I can't stomach the thought of it, though I was an avid wine drinker prior to the pregnancy.  I have also heard its ok in great moderation though.

Just as an FYI, my sister wasn't diagnosed until she was 12. So it's not always obvious the impact that drinking had upon a child when they are toddlers, for example.

  • Just the thought of wine gives me heartburn right now, but we're going to a wedding in Australia over Christmas and I think I'll definitely have a glass of champagne then...
