Success after IF

Poll for PCOS SAIF ladies (especially those of lean/average weight)

Hello! I'm a regular on IF, but just recently started lurking over here. It's an inspiration to read this board and I am so excited for all of you!

My question is for those of you diagnosed with PCOS, particularly if you are lean or average body weight (since I know the physiological mechanisms can be different among low BMI versus higher BMI with PCOS). Once you were diagnosed and started treatments (met/clomid/femara and more), how long did it take you to conceive with success leading to your current pregnancy/baby?

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Poll for PCOS SAIF ladies (especially those of lean/average weight)

  • Both children of mine took three treated months. I am not lean, but I am not terrible overweight. I took clomid the first month, and it did not work, so we went to injectables.
  • Loading the player...
  • while i'm not tiny/thin, i'm also not that overweight. Weight was not an issue for me until i hit 30.

we got pg with griffin on the first cycle of clomid/met/IUI/trigger.  When we TTC #2 we got pg on the 2nd cycle... and we got 2 babies :)

  • I was diagnosed with mild PCOS and the only symptom I have is irregular ovulation/cycles.  I also had a chocolate cyst on my ovary and some uterine fibroids and I believe those played a bigger role in my IF than the PCOS.

  • 19 months and IVF. I almost think being thin makes it more tricky since you can't lose weight to help things. Good luck!! Page me if you have any questions!

  • I am not "thin" by any means......but not overweight either and I don't have the typical "extra" bodyweight that comes with the typical PCOS diagnosis.

That being said.....I was dx with PCOS in October '06. Started on Met right away. We got PG on our own in December (but had an early m/c at 5.5 weeks....). We then did our first round of IUI and injects in January and that's the month we got PG with DS #1 :)

We then got PG on our own (I wasn't even on Met.....) when DS #1 was 9 months, but had a m/c at 10.5 weeks :(

I then went back on Met (in order to get ready for another treatment cycle....) in October '08. We got PG on our own in Feb. '09 and DS #2 was born 2 weeks ago!

    GL to you!

  • I chose 1.5-2 years because I initially treated with just my OB even though I had a diagnosis, I did this b/c of my insurance.  Then when I switched to an RE I had to do a lot more testing so that tacked on several months and I took an insurance/mental health break for about 3 months in there as well.  Also, I wasted too many months with Clomid, I wish I hadn't gone through 3 full cycles and then done one with Femara.  I would have pushed for injects sooner, because that worked with b2b IUIs on the very first try!  Also, I am pretty thin naturally, I am always borderline underweight/normal for BMI.  I am also not insulin resistant so besides anovulation and the classic "string of pearls" cysts I don't have many symptoms.  I think that made me harder to treat.

  • I've never had weight issues, but I did lose 10 lbs. on Metformin right away.  I ended up conceiving with IVF, but I also have MTHFR, so that could be why it took me 9 months post-diagnosis to conceive (17 months total).

    Best of luck!

PCOS, lupus anticoagulant, MTHFR (A1298C, one copy) 2 IUIs & 1 IVF = BFN FET#1 = It's a girl! Born 7.1.10 FET#2 = c/p FET#3 = Twin girls! Born on 3.16.12 at 33w2d due to severe pre-E. After 4 weeks in the NICU they are home! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • I had PCOS symptoms since I hit puberty and once I came off the pill to TTC, I gained somewhere around 30lbs, which definitely put me in the overweight camp. I wasn't diagnosed until June of 2008 and was put on Metform at that time. I tried Clomid in Jan of 2009 and that didn't work, so within the same cycle I started injectibles. I overstimulated on the injects so the cycle was canceled, but I got pg anyway.
  • Just noticed you're in MD. If you don't have an RE already, I highly recommend Shady Grove Fertility. There are quite a few offices and a bunch of us over here went to them. If you've got any questions on SGFC, the girls here can definitely answer.
  • It took us over 18 months since we started TTC, but only 8 months after I got my dx.  We did 7 rounds of Clomid + Met, which isn't the standard protocol, but it worked for us.  We had just done our IVF consult and were about to start next cycle when I got my BFP.  We were going to skip IUI all-together as the RE didn't think it would make a difference as we have no MFI.
  • I am about average and it took 3 iui's for us.
Dx: PCOS/Amenorrhea/Anovulatory/lining problems. Clomid = BFN's. Lots of cancelled cycles due to thin lining or cysts. IUI#1= Follistim, estrace and endometrin = BFN IUI#2= Repronex, follistim, viagra suppositories and endometrin= BFN. IUI#3= Repronex, follistim, viagra suppositories, femtrace and endometrin= BFP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isabella born in June via C-section!!!!! She is so incredible! Went back to RE to TTC#2 and got a WONDERFUL surprise!! Baby #2 on their way!! My Beautiful son Liam born Feb, 2011!! Lilypie image Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • I voted for 2+ years, but I tend to think that our difficulties and m/c had more to do with my clotting disorders and balanced translocation than the PCOS.

  • Thanks so much for all of the responses so far! It's very helpful to hear everyone's feedback so that we can have realistic expectations. Also, thanks for the Shady Grove rec. They are right around the corner from me, so it's good to know they are an option if we opt into dh's insurance for this. I'm active duty military, so at the moment I have to go to a military facility. The RE there seems on top of it, and my ob/gyn referred me right away as soon as he suspected PCOS, which is good b/c it's my only option with my coverage!
