Breast Pump...did you register for it?

So at every shower that has been in the family, the mom-to-be always registers for a Breast Pump.  My mother-in-law always says it is a personal item and tacky to put it on your registry...do you think it is tacky to register for it?  I kind of wonder if it is her generation...BF wasn't popular 30 years ago with formula being the craze.  She also adopted my husband and his brother so that could be another reason.

Re: Breast Pump...did you register for it?

  • I was wondering the same thing..i'm curious what the others will have to say. I was also thinking..what if you can't breastfeed (it doesn't work out)..then we'll be stuck with pumps?!

  • I did...but it seems everyone I know thinks it's an ok item to register for. I think it's a "to each their own" Go with what you feel is right, it's your registry Big Smile Good luck!

  • I did. And if no one gets it for me, I will. I'm all about that completion coupon!

  • I didnt, I guess I feel like your MIL. I feel like its a personal item and it would make me uncomfortable for someone to give it to me in front of everyone at a shower. Same thing with the breast pads.

But like pp said, to each their own! If your comfortable putting it on, go for it!

  • I'm going to, but I'm not planning on getting it, since I also see it as a personal item.  But the discount will help at least!  Though, FYI, if you register like at Target, you can put it on the registry after the shower, and still get the registry completion discount (or I did that for my wedding anyway, and the booklet they give you says you can so I didn't feel bad about it).

  • Is this your first? I only ask because it's possible that you might have problems bf'ing and won't need one.  If that is not something you worry about, then I say go for it.  I waited with #1 because I had no idea how it would go.  Then went and bought mine a couple of weeks after he was born.  Just my situation and how I handled it.

  • I didn't, just because I didn't want anyone from work to see it. (I had a work shower.)

  • To be honest, there's like a 1% chance anyone will buy it for you, it's just not a gift people get.  And putting it on your registry for the completion coupon is silly, it's only 10% off, you could use one of their 20% off coupons and save a lot more on it.

At Target?  Or just BRU?  I was thinking Target sometimes has it on sale to begin with, but maybe I was wrong about that...

  • If you just want it for the completion discount, add it after your shower. My "event date" is her due date.

Personally, I would not put it on. But it depends on you as a person and your group of friends and family.

  • My mother just about insisted I put it on my registry.  But she's very pro breast feeding and had to fight the good fight in the 70s when it was taboo.  She'd have me shout to the world that I plan to try to BF.

That said, if it is purchased for me, I'd return it for store credit and rebuy when and if my milk comes in.

  • I didn't put it on my registry just because I don't want my guests considering my breats when shopping for me and I don't want my receiving a breast pump, at my shower, to spark some kind of great debate about breastfeeding in general.  Personally, I don't think it's "tacky" at all.  I think if you are comfortable with it you should go for it.
  • I was going to but my insurance company  (cigna) will pay for it if my OB writes a script for it the day the baby is born and we fax it over. Saves us (or someone else) 300$
  • I put a Medela manual one on mine, it's cheapish enough that if someone buys it and I don't end up using it I won't feel too bad. Plus, I'll be a SAHM so don't think I'll need an electric pump.
  • I always thought it was a little odd that people put breast pumps on their registries, but I just put one on mine as well.  If someone wants to get it for me great, if not I'll buy it myself.
  • Of course it's going on my registry.  My reasons why:

    1. I don't see a breast pump as a gift for me, it's helping me to provide food for my LO when I go back to work/DH wants to get involved/my boobs are otherwise unavailable.  I think it's tacky to register for gifts that are ONLY for you.

    2. That food happens to come from my breasts, which if you have a women-only shower, everyone else also has.  I'm not embarrassed by this at all.

    3.  I don't plan on opening it until I need it, so if BFing doesn't work out for some reason, I can return it unopened.

    agreed

  • I will not. I am actually going to use my friends. I just bought new tubing and the thing that actually touches your breast. The milk doesn't touch anything else. She has a Medela pump-in-style and is done having kids. IMO it's a total waste of $2-300. A couple of my friends used theirs twice and people rarely buy that for you.
