3rd Trimester

Why would 1 preg. lady say that to another!? (vent)

I was at prenatal yoga, and we always start class with saying our name and how far along we are and anything that is up. ?So I share that at my 36 wek appt. I was told I had high levels of amniotic fluid and was 4 cms. dilated. ?The instructor was asking the class why high levels would be a problem since I had mentioned how they were going to check my levels again at my 37 week appt. and nobody said anything. ?

So, at the end of class, a woman comes up to me and says something along the lines of "I don't want to freak you out (concern you, whatever) but...." ? Seriously, if you need to start your sentence like that perhaps it's best not to share! ?Anyways, she goes on to tell me that her sister just had a baby and she also had high amniotic fluid levels and that her sisters baby was born with a rare birth defect where the?diaphragm?has a hole in it and the intestines enter the lungs, making it hard for them to develop and hard for baby to breath. ?

I understand that she was just trying to be helpful and make me aware of it so I could talk to the doctor at my next ultrasound to take a closer look at that area but I was still blown away by the comment. ?I guess it doesn't help that I have been super paranoid my entire pregnancy that something is/will go wrong. ?

I seriously did not know how to respond. ?Just told her thanks, and that hopefully they would have been able to spot something wrong with the baby since this next ultrasound would be my 7th!

Am I just being overly sensitive??

?

  • Are they sure that there's a connection between high fluid levels and a diaphragmatic hernia? It's nice to know the risks or what happened to someone who had the same thing as you, but you can have high fluid levels for many reasons. And you're right, the way she said it would make me more nervous.

  • WOW how sweet of her! Some people are just like that in my 1st tri I had spotting and my friend told me to say goodbye it wasn't going to last that was how her miscarriage started. Wow how wrong she was good thing I just ignored her! How can they find these comments helpful?!
  • I'm sure a birth defect like that is sooooo rare, and I would never want to get something like that into another woman's head.  We have enough to worry about already.  I don't think you're being overly sensitive at all.  Just try to think about what the odds could be of something like that happening.. so slim.  I hope you are able to put that comment out of your mind.

  • I think I would feel the same way if I was in your position. I can't watch tv shows anymore about bad things happening to pregnant women or their babies because it just makes me anxious and I would not want someone telling me horror stories either.

Yes m/c's can start that way but only 50% of bleeding leads to m/c. I would have been pissed. It's every PG girl's fear and I bled my entire 1st tri.

  • I had lots of amniotic fluid with DS2 and he is a normal and healthy baby.  I have never heard of the above mentioned being associated with high levels of amnio.  I only know of an issue with swallowing.  Does baby have hiccups?  If so don't worry about it.

Some women don't realize what is coming out of their mouths.

Yeah, he does get hiccups. ?At least I am pretty sure. ?

I am not going to let her comment torment me and make me worry just because it would be so rare for this to happen. ?She did not say that having high fluid levels causes this problem but that they are often present together.

Yeah she insisted it wasn't normal and people who bleed miscarry! I was terrified my whole first tri I think I ran to the bathroom every 5 minutes even though my OB said it was OK and normal for me

  • I was overdue and my cousin told me that her cousin up north went to 41 weeks and her baby was still born, and if I went to 41 weeks my baby would be still born.

    I went to 41 weeks & 5 days..

My baby girl is 9 weeks.. <3

There have been many women who have had high amniotic fluid levels & thier babies were perfect..

I know it's hard to not worry, but just keep positive & realize that people always think they know better than you or your doctor!

Wow...that would really piss me off! ?Why would someone say that? ?My mother went full term and had a still born so I know all about anxiety surrounding that topic. ?How could your cousin think she was being helpful??

  • Typically with high amniotic fluid levels the concern is with kidney function. I have a sneaking suspicion that the issue your yoga-mates sister had with the diaphragm was completely unrelated to the fluid level.

Someone who I know had high amniotic fluid with her now 1 year old daughter.  Her daughter was born completely healthy.  They kept an eye on her fluid levels to make sure things were ok and you can probably expect your Dr. to keep a watch.  I wouldn't worry about anything unless your Dr. seems overly concerned. I'm sure he/she has seen this before and knows what to do to help you and your LO.
