Maternity clothes shopping sucks!

So I went maternity clothes shopping in the small little town I live in (2 options:  JC Penny's and Kohls) this Friday and it was soooo depressing.  None of the pants fit.  at all. I am 13 weeks and a few days, but I thought I would give it a try.  I haven't gained a single pound.  Not one!  I am normally a size 16-18.  My pants are starting to get uncomfortable, and the beband is only going to get me so far.

Does anyone have any suggestions for reasonably priced maternity wear?  The regular sized tops fit me fine, but for the bottoms I will probably need plus size.  Has anyone had any luck or should I just give in and buy the mumu?  Or is it spelled "moo-moo"?

Frustrated in Northern California!!! grrrrrrr!

  • Old Navy & Gap (online) - that's where I got my pants.

  • I vote for you to online shop also.

  • IMO, 13 weeks is too early and leads to frustration.  I tried on things from Target at 14 weeks and was frustrated as hell.  Buy 16 weeks it wasn't so bad and I fit into the pants better.

I like Old Navy, and their online selection is much better than in store.  Plus not all stores carry a maternity line.  Motherhood Maternity isn't bad either.  But revisit those stores after a few weeks.  You may notice that things fit better.

Also, for me, a size smaller than my pre-pregnancy fits better.   Example, I was a 16 pre-preggo, but I fit into size 14 or L better.

  • I've only just started and am not happy. I don't do well with ordering pants online b/c I've got long legs but a big booty :) Not sure what the heck I'm going to do since Kohl's had nothing and I really want to go inexpensive. A few friends recommended a consignment shop so I'm going to hit that soon.

I agree with this. Wait until you're a little further along for pants. I tried on every maternity pant in the state of Colorado yesterday (or so it seemed) and nothing fit quite right yet. Give it a month and try again.

  • If it makes you feel any better... (which I know it probably won't...but misery loves company Smile) ... I STILL can't find clothes I like... I'm not really showing yet... but my clothes are getting tight..thanks mostly to the bigger boobs and the love handles I have grown on my back.... I wound up buying a few things yesterday that were not maternity..but regular sizes but are longer, baggier, and stretchier than my normal things from Old Navy clearance...I think it's a hard transition between clothes and maternity clothes... I try to keep positive .... eventually we will have nice bumps!

  • I got 2 pairs of jeans at old navy yesterday.  They have several different styles of waist band (full panel, low rise etc) so you might be able to find something that fits better.  I'm not quite big enough for real maternity clothes, but my clothes are getting tight. I found that the low rise waist band ones felt better on me, rather than the full panel at this point and I still have a lot of room to grow in them.

Agreed - I'm just starting to switch over to my maternity pants at 22 weeks.  They're still big.

  • Maybe just get a couple pairs of pants in a bigger size for now, something on sale or clearance.  The only pants that I have found that fit me well are from the gap.  I am the same size as you but the 14s fit best.  They are $ but if on sale then not so bad.

  • I'm only just now starting to wear full on, head to toe, maternity clothes. I tided myself over for a while with a beband, long/maternity tank tops and cardigans. Until a few weeks ago, everything just seemed the wrong shape.

I have had good luck with Old Navy, Gap, and Target (less so with Target- but they do have cheap basics like tank tops and long sleeve tees)

  • I agree with people.  I bought a size up around 12 weeks and those lasted me another four or so weeks.  I figure they won't go to waste because I'll need them as my weight is (hopefully) on the way day post-partum.

I invested in a pair of black pants that are actually thicker and stretchy.  I wear them to work and they are super-comfy.  I made my best friend at work tell me whether they were dressy enough -- we're honest with each other like that -- and she said they were.

If you have a hard time finding things you like and fit, I'd suggest investing a little more money and just buying fewer pieces.  I have a pair of jeans ($29 at Gap), black pants for work ($70 Olia brand I think), black skirt (motherhood for like $30), three dresses for work (about $70 each but I wear each once a week and technically I'm supposed to be wearing business suits), and yoga pants from Target ($20).

I bought most of this at 16-17 weeks and I honestly think I'll need another pair of pants and dress by the end because stuff will no longer fit!

  • I feel your pain.  I went shopping today and am so frustrated.  I am only 15 weeks, but my belly is huge and my bella band is really getting on my nerves.  I found one pair of maternity jeans that I liked at old navy.  I am really short too, so I have to get them hemmed and all of the maternity tops look like dresses on me!
