Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you listen to the "not for children under 3" warnings?

Sorry if this is totally stupid, but I'm not a good judge of what is age-appropriate since I was never really around any small children before DS, so I tend to just go with the manufacturer's recommendation.  But a lot of the things I have seen people talk about getting and that I am considering for DS (easel, play food for his kitchen, etc) all say they have small parts and aren't recommended for under age 3.

Are you able to find things that are more for 18m and up and I am just missing them?  Or do you just take the warning as a suggestion and know your kid will be fine with it?

  • If it has small parts that my DC is likely to eat or lose around the house, I hold off on it.  But some things like blocks and other big riding toys are ok, IMO.

  • me personally i take the warning as a suggestion.  Now if its something totally looking like he could choke on something no i dont give it to him but somethings like legos say between 2 - 5 the pieces are quite large i dont know how he could choke on those things.

  • Eh it depends.  Most of the things I will get her for christmas are 18 months and up.  she'll be 14 months when she gets them.  totally fine I think.  I'm getting her a play kitchen but the one I'm getting is 18 months+ instead of 3.  But yeah if it says 3 and she is 1 then I'm going to think twice about it.  stuff that says 2 i would consider
  • It depends. If it has lots of small parts as the reason, then no, I don't let DS play with it. But some things I just don't see the logic in, so I decided case by case. For example, DS has a plastic maraca that says 3+, but there is nothing for him to choke on or anything, so he can use it. His bath xylophone is also 3+ and I guess it's because the metal plates come off easily, but I let him use it because I'm supervising him while he plays with it (bath only).
  • No I don't. If there are small parts, then I don't let her have those toys. But the age 3 and up thing is often just for liability purposes IMO. And on some things it's just a developmentally appropriate age suggestion. dd has some board books that say ages 3 and up. board books ffs! lol

  • DS doesn't tend to put things in his mouth, though if it is something that had really teeny parts, I would probably not give it to him. but otherwise he can have things that are 3+.
  • Yes I have had the same problem.  I agree with the pp that is must be a liability issue.  I don't know what it is about the magical age of 3 that makes kids aware to not swallow things and/or their throats become an appropriate size!  I try to just use common sense but I am a paranoid person so it is hard.

  • I do look at the age recommendations but if it doesn't have small parts or it doesn't look too advanced then I will still get it.

For instance, DS is suddenly into tunneling so I bought him a tent and tunnel for Christmas.  The box said age 4+ but I think that's pretty silly.  I think he'll get the most enjoyment out of it now.

  • Same as what every else is saying.  It depends.  His favorite toy is one of those big bouncy balls and it is for "ages 3 and up."   I still avoid toys with small pieces though.
