Sorry if this is totally stupid, but I'm not a good judge of what is age-appropriate since I was never really around any small children before DS, so I tend to just go with the manufacturer's recommendation. But a lot of the things I have seen people talk about getting and that I am considering for DS (easel, play food for his kitchen, etc) all say they have small parts and aren't recommended for under age 3.
Are you able to find things that are more for 18m and up and I am just missing them? Or do you just take the warning as a suggestion and know your kid will be fine with it?
Re: Do you listen to the "not for children under 3" warnings?
me personally i take the warning as a suggestion. Now if its something totally looking like he could choke on something no i dont give it to him but somethings like legos say between 2 - 5 the pieces are quite large i dont know how he could choke on those things.
Yes I have had the same problem. I agree with the pp that is must be a liability issue. I don't know what it is about the magical age of 3 that makes kids aware to not swallow things and/or their throats become an appropriate size! I try to just use common sense but I am a paranoid person so it is hard.
I do look at the age recommendations but if it doesn't have small parts or it doesn't look too advanced then I will still get it.
For instance, DS is suddenly into tunneling so I bought him a tent and tunnel for Christmas. The box said age 4+ but I think that's pretty silly. I think he'll get the most enjoyment out of it now.
Same as what every else is saying. It depends. His favorite toy is one of those big bouncy balls and it is for "ages 3 and up." I still avoid toys with small pieces though.
