Breast Pump Question

So I was reading in Baby Bargains that you should never share a Medela breast pump.  My question is if you get all new parts what is the difference from sharing one to renting one?  There are places around me that rent them out - aren't they just replacing the parts for each rental?

Re: Breast Pump Question

  • I think it's fine if you replace the parts... it just voids the warranty if there is more than one user!

  • the hospital grade ones that you rent are a closed system and the medela and others are open system, meaning the milk goes through the whole thing, the inside of the pump is not sealed off, at least that is what i have heard

    This is what I've heard too ... but I don't know ...

  • I have never shared a pump but my girlfriend did it and she changed out all the parts, everything is fine.  She has been nursing her daughter for 7 mths now.
  • Meh, I'm using the one my sister is lending me.  No way I'm going to spend that much $$ when I have double breast pump for free.

  • I would feel fine borrowing a pump from a sister or close friend, but wouldn't buy one off of ebay or from someone I didn't know- the milk does get into the pump itself, not just the tubes. Who knows what diseases that person could have that you don't want your baby exposed to- gross! The only pump I know of thats a closed system is the Ameda Purely Yours, which I have and love!

Ditto.  The price sucks, but if you're really going to pump, then it's worth it.  I've heard from lots of other women, though, that you really should just rent at first to make sure you don't give up on pumping right away--you'd hate to spend the $300 and then be stuck with a pump you don't use and can't easily get rid of since many don't purchase off strangers.

Have you ever actually used one of these? The milk doesn't even go in the tubes, it goes from breast to bottle.
