2nd Trimester

Did anyone ever donate their hair?

My hair is growing very fast thanks to the pnv.

I'm thinking of growing it all the way out and then donating it to locks of love.  I can't imagine washing and drying that  much hair though with a newborn.

If you did it - how long did it take you to grow it?

Re: Did anyone ever donate their hair?

  • I donated mine to Patene Beautiful Lengths. It took me about a year to grow, I think...

My mom had the longest red hair before I was born and she chopped it because I would put it in my mouth as an infant. I keep trying to get her to grow it but she won't!

  • Shawty does it.

I on the other hand have hair to my mid-shoulder level now and I loathe it already. I am going home for the Holidays if only to get a hair cut. O_O No long hair with a baby for me thanks.

  • Sassy - how many inches ddid you have to have for Pantene?

I think locks of love is 10.  If I could do less, I'd totally do it.

The last time my hair was that long was when I got married.  Stupid me didn't even think about donating it then.

  • I've donated 3 times to Locks of Love. I've been growing my hair out for 3 years, but I started VERY short and now it is VERY long. You could probably do it in 2, depending on how long your hair is now versus how long you want it to be after you donate.
  • Oh, LoL needs 10 and it can't be bleached or proecessed. It has to be healthy, yada yada. Pantene may have less strict rules, but it doesn't mean that they will be able to use it. LoL will use whatever hair they get. If you donate less than 10 inches, the hair can go to other sources (I can't think of any examples) to raise money for making the wigs.
  • I have been trying to do this forever and finally gotten to the point where all the dyed stuff is cut out.  I'm going to keep going until I can cut it a little longer than chin length.  Some people's hair grows super fast (like a friend of mine whose donated a couple of times now) and then others grow slow (like mine =( )

Good to know.  My hair is really healthy and hasn't been processed (highlights) in years.

I'm thinking I have about 3 inches now, so another 7 inches should take me a year or so.... since I just got 3-4 inches cut off last month.

Ponytails are going to be my friend I think.

  • I've been planning to donate for LOL after the babies come. Started off with just below shoulder length (this time last year) and now is past shoulder blades. I can't wait to get rid of it - already all I feel like doing is putting it in a ponytail.
  • LoL will take dyed hair, just not bleached. I donated mine a few years back. 10 inches turned out not to be that great a feat - I may have grown it 2 years or a little less.

  • I think is is 8...

  • I donated to pantene after my wedding..... I think they only need 8 inches.... It took me about a year or so to grow it out .... My hair grows like a weed....I think I am going to grow it out for a while and maybe donate it again... It can't be processed ... I think because they wind up coloring it to match the other hair they have...So they don't want it to be damaged ....

  • I donated mine to locks of love. I had not cut my hair for a year. It was mid-back length and I cut it to my chin. I was 18 and had blonde hair. I even got a sweet thank you note. It was touching, I say do it!
  • Hey just so you know the salon I worked at we did Locks of Love and you still can actually donate your hair even if it's not the whole 10 inches. What they do is sell that hair to other wig companies then use the money to help fund the wigs they make! So it's a win- win situation!

Let me know if you have any questions!

    This is from their website

" Shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs. Although the shorter hair cannot be used in the hairpieces, it still greatly helps to reduce costs."

Hair that was colored can be used just not bleached.

  • If any of you are thinking of doing this, please do.  This is a wonderful program that helps many people.  My niece has alopecia and cannot grow hair due to health problesm.  She has just turned 4 and has no hair at all.  LOL gives her 1 free wig a year.  These wigs are very expensive and her parents would never be able to afford them.  She is a darling child that will face much teasing in the years to come, but having a wig will offset that.  To all of you who have donated...Thank you so much.  It truly makes a difference.

No worries! I couldn't remember exact details. I merely alluded to them... and I could have been talking out of my butt for all I could remember. Hehehe...

I wonder if LoL is looking for a short pregnant spokesmodel. Hmmmmm...

I could totally be that girl.

Okay, I'm totally doing this now.  Thank you for sharing your story.  God bless your niece.  ((hugs))

  • I don't want to seem like a horrible person, but Locks of Love is not the charity that everyone seems to think that it is. My sister used to donate her hair to this organization all the time but then decided to do some research and was a little shocked by what she found. Locks of Love does not meet the Better Business Bureau's standards to labeled as an accredited charity. It did not disclose accurate financial information to the BBB.

Also, more than likely, the hair you donate will not end up in a wig but being sold to wig makers. This was what came a shocker to my sister. She thought that the hair she was donating would be made into part of a finished product for a little girl/boy who needed it. Most people's hair quality is not up to the standards needed to make a wig. The vast majority is labeled "unusable" and sold. So, your hair is going to pay for pretty websites, CEO's salaries, and advertisement.

Sadly, not all the wigs that are made are not donated to the children. Some are sold on a sliding scale based upon family finances. In my opinion a charity should not be selling anything to the people it is trying to help.

There are other smaller charities that do the same work and are much better at it. If you are comfortable with Locks of Love then I don't want to discourage anybody. I have great respect for anyone who gives of themself in this way. It really is an amazing and selfless gift.

I know that there has been some controversy about their finances and what not, but I don't think it should discount from what they actually do accomplish.

The fact that not all hair goes to the wigs is well known. If it doesn't meet their standards, it can't be used. Most people donate unusable hair, so they use it to pay off the costs of making the wigs.

Also, it may be a charity, but it doesn't mean that making wigs is free of cost. They are nonprofit organization. It costs money to make the wigs. The wigs aren't just a handout. If they were, LoL would be considered a not-for-profit organization, but with the costs that go into making wigs, it just can't be possible.

  • I did it, and what made me make the final decision was this:  My hair will grow back soon, their hair will not.  So I did it, no regrets!

Yes  Like shorty said no they do not use everyone's hair because frankly most people treat their hair like *** ( i am a hairstylist) they sell the hair to fund making the wigs that they make for children.
