1st Trimester

prenatal massages....

Does anyone know if this is a "no go" in the 1st Tri??

I've done some reading online and it seems that you aren't supposed to do anything during your  1st Tri (according to those posts)...i.e., hair, nails, facials, etc.  I feel like I could REALLY use a massage!!!

Re: prenatal massages....

  • Funny you mentioned this. I just got off the phone with a massage place (I have a gift certificat from last year that I still haven't used). They told me that I needed to be in my 2nd trimester for a pregnancy massage.

  • BOO to that! :) Why is is that when you're most miserable, you can't do much about it??  OH well, guess I shouldn't complain!! I just feel so miserable today! :(

    Thanks for the info!

  • Professional places won't do it until 2nd tri. It's a liability thing. Since miscarriages happen most often in 1st tri, they don't want to be held responsible if someone does miscarriage at some point after a massage.
  • Not true, I'm a massage therapist, if anyone has any questions, I trained extensively in prenatal massage.  The LMT just has to know you're pregnant, make a couple of changes, and the client needs to drink plenty of water.  If a place isn't willing, then they probably don't have anyone trained in prenatal massage.  For contraindications or other questions, just ask!

  • Trust me, 1st trimester really isn't uncomfortable compared to 3rd. That last month is a killer.

Respectfully to the PP who is a massage therepist, I have gone to more than 5 therepists who won't touch you until you're over 14 weeks. It's a liability.

  • I think different therapists have different rules. My OB recommended waiting until 2nd tri.

This! Save all the credit you can for the 3rd tri! You'll want it then.

If you're miserable because of nausea, a massage will NOT help.

If you're miserable because of aches & pains...?? Third tri will kick your booty.

  • Depends on your state.  Certain states don't regulate massage.  Fortunately I'm in a state that closely regulates.  Any legit LMT should carry liability insurance.  Massage doesn't cause miscarrage.  If a woman is high-risk, I'd always talk to the ob/perinatalogist.  If its a typical pregnancy and the woman is extra concerned, I'd talk to the dr, a good LMT should always be extra cautious.  If you are going for nausea, massage can make it worse.  If you're going for headaches, massage could make it better.  If you're limited in how many times you can get a prenatal massage, save it, believe me, second trimester you'll be side-lying.  Oh and no deep tissue, I've had clients as for that and I refuse, this is a time for nuturing touch, relaxation, not aggressive massage therapy that some of you might be use to.  Trust your gut if the LMT studied preg massage in school for a week, that's not enough.  If they went through a program looking at all aspects of massage in pregnancy, you'll be ok.  But, be open, honest, and involve your dr.  If your dr doesn't ok it, then an LMT better not touch you.

  • I've heard it's OK in the 1st tri as long as it's a someone trained in prenatal massage, but to be honest, I can't imagine lying face down on a table when my bbs hurt so much! :D
