car seat hammock in a restaurant?

I have never heard of or seen this before.  Last night we went out to eat and DS was asleep in his car seat.  The waiters kept telling us to put the seat in this hammock thing--kind of like a suitcase rack with a mesh hammock.  We always prefer to keep the car seat on the floor because I am so afraid of it falling off a high surface.  We said no, but they kind of acted like we were the weird ones for not wanting to use their hammock thingy.

Has anyone ever heard of or seen this?  I thought it was a bit kooky, but maybe the waiters like it because they can see the baby easier?

  • Oh yeah! We've used those a bunch. They're pretty neat and I think pretty safe. You can also turn over one of those wooden high chairs and put the carseat on the bottom rungs. That way the baby is closer to you.

  • Never heard of it - and we've taken both kids to all kinds of restaurants since they were very young.
  • I have seen them an used them. The first restaurant I saw it at was Carrabbas. I think they are safe also. (I wouldn't keep them on the floor because things could get spilled on them. just my opinion)

  • I've seen them and used them. I think they're great, seem very secure, and the babies were right near us.

  • I have used those before and it was perfectly safe. I don't like keeping him on the floor because of spilling and people tripping over him.

  • I love those hammock things.  I wish more places had them.

  • We've used them plenty of times and had no issues.  I actually prefer those to flipping the high chair because the sling held our car seat more securely.

  • I'm super paranoid, so I prefer to bring in our snap-n-go and leave DD in that. It sometimes irritates the people at restaurants, but my grandparents watched a baby fall out of one of the carseat holder things (it tipped) so I'd rather be safe than sorry!

  • Very safe and I really like it.
  • i prefer to have the infant seat raised on something (a chair, hammock, etc) because keeping it on the floor puts them at risk for getting tripped over/on, things spilled on them, etc... unless you are near a wall and they are completely out of the way from people walking, etc.
  • Yep, we used them al of the time when dd was little.   I think they are really secure and wasn't ever worried about it tipping.  She was level with me and it was easy for me to gently rock her in it.
