Having a Baby - Nortwestern Memorial Hospital - Chicago

I am planning on having a child next year and just found out that Northwestern Memorial Hospital does not take HMO.  If I was to go with the PPO option my employer offers I will pay an extra $140 per month.  ($1680 year).

If I do get pregnant, the HMO only requires for me to pay a $250 Copayment. (THIS covers all costs)

The PPO has a $250 copay, and they only cover 90%.

 A natural birth can range from at least $10,000 - $15,000 and a c -section can range from $15,000 - $30,000.

Therefore the PPO would cost a lot more.

Is Northwestern Hospital worth the extra expense?

  • I would check with the specific OB/GYN you are planning on using.  I was going to deliver at Northwestern and those prices are a little high from what I remember.  We are going to deliver at a different hospital due to moving, and it is no where near that price either.

In a nutshell, if you have certain medical conditions or happen to develop one while pregnant or giving birth, Northwestern is the place to be.

    Hope that helps

  • I also have a PPO and was shocked at how much I had to pay (I didn't do any research) - although we have a $2000 cap and ended up paying close to that for me (haven't paid DD's bill yet).

That being said, my DD unexpectedly came 6 weeks early... and during the two weeks we spent visiting her in the NICU, I think we said on a daily basis "I'm so glad we're here."  Of course, most hospitals will do a good job with you, but Prentice is awesome and Children's Memorial was awesome.

  • Are you right in the city? Evanston Hospital has a great NICU as well and I know women come from various suburbs to deliver there for that reason, as a "just in case" measure. I agree that there are great specialists at Northwestern, but I think there are also other great hospitals in the area. Maybe just do some research- especially asking your OB/Gyn his/her thoughts.

  • I know Dr. Ann Starr has taken HMO in the past. Call her office and ask them. I have a friend that has HMO that sees to her.
