Fulton County Superior Ct jury duty

Just got my mail to find a nice little note saying I have jury duty December 1st. It's one of those that if you don't get called in that day you're done with it. I'm more worried about getting called in since we leave december 5th for Disney World. Do you think if I get called in and tell them we have a paid trip that they won't pick me? Can they make me stay and miss my vacation?

Any other time I'd be fine with this but not now.

  • Yeah, I think vacation not so much a valid excuse, though if you are BF, I think THAT would be more valid since you have to go pump and/or feed your baby.

  • I thought if you could present evidence that you have a paid trip that they will excuse you. I remember getting waived before because I had to travel for work. So, I don't know if it's the same rule for personal vacation.I also live in Dekalb so maybe different rules.
  • I don't think vacation will get you out of it, and I'm pretty sure that Georgia isn't one of the states that allows for exemption due to breastfeeding, but needing to take breaks to pump is definitely something you should mention should you get called into the courtroom.  I don't have any great advice on how to get out of it but I can say that I've been called at least 3 different times and never actually made it into a courtroom.  Also, if you did get called then chances are good that you would be done prior to your trip on the 5th.

Sorry you have to deal with the bad timing... good luck!

  • Oh, maybe a vacation can get you out of it... check out this link:

It says you need to submit a request in writing at least 10 days prior to your summons date.  Good luck!

  • BF is not an excuse.  They have a private room for pumping.  I've used it many many times.  I'm not sure about the trip part.....although you could just act crazy during juror questioning.  Scream out "Fry them all!"  I'm pretty sure that would get you dismissed.  :)

Now that i think about it...trips are not a valid excuse.  Someone tried to use that one.  The judge said So sorry.

Hahaha!!! I don't know if yall watch 30 Rock but there was an episode last year where she had jury duty and she dressed up as princess leia. The only problem was that everyone was dressed crazy so she didn't get out of it.

I'm going to write a letter to see if they will defer it. I don't mind doing it at all just not right before we leave.

  • LOL Kerrin!!!

Are you a SAHM? If so, you can complete a form saying that you are the caregiver of your child, etc., and get it notarized. That is excusable.

  • I just had jury duty last month.  It is up to the digression of the judge if they let you go or not.  They won't let you go just because you are a breast feeding mom as they have a lactation room.  The judge let me go because we had a wedding to go to that Thursday in DC and I had no one to watch my son if DH went by himself and I was stuck in jury duty.

They usually ask if you have a scheduling conflict and then hear what it is.  They asked me how long I had had the airline tickets and how long we had been planning the trip.

  • I don't know a ton about GA courts, but I know that most states usually allow you to postpone your service a few times due to scheduling conflicts.  You just have to let them know in advance and give them a time that might be more convenient for you.  I know in CA, you can postpone up to 3 times - not sure about GA, but their website or info hotline should tell you.  If you actually agree to serve (and don't ask for an extension), then vacation or breastfeeding is likely not an excuse.  People have gotten really saavy lately and the judges have heard it all.  They are becoming less and less inclined to let people out of jury duty once you agree to serve.  Good luck!
  • I got out of superior court jury duty b/c I am a bf'ing mom. you can request it online at their website. Just tell them you are the sole provider (and bf'ing) to your son. i got a letter a week or so later. Let me go find the link.
  • I couldn't find the link, but here is where i sent the email. imagejury_inbox@gand.uscourts.gov
  • i have submitted the letter to fulton county asking to be excused because of a scheduled trip and it worked. i will say i had to call the court house to verify i was excused because i never heard back froim them.
  • I am a lawyer and used to work in Fulton County. Are you a stay at home mom? If you are, then there is legal exception for primary care givers of children under a certain age (it's either 2 or 5 I don't remember but either way your child qualifies). If you work, then the exception doesn't apply. THis is a legal exception for all of Georgia, not just Fulton County. If you work, you can always request a different time and see what happens. And it depends on the Judge as to whether it will work. Also, they have a one day, one trial system. If you don't get picked for a trial on the 1st or don't get called in for the 1st, you don't have to report after that. If you get picked to actually be on a trial on the 1st, you'll stay until the trial is finished. And yes, they do have a lacation room - it is little known but it is in the Government Center building across from the main courthouse and I think you have to get a key from human resources to get in (at least the last time I was there). FYI to any Fulton County employees - free loaner hospital grade breastpump to use for the duration of you breastfeeding. Few people know about that too.
  • You can request a deferment due to travel, I think -- I did it when we were going to England a couple of summers ago.  They didn't give me any hassle about it.
