Re: What groups/classes/etc are you a part of?

  • Repeated from my last post, but here you go:

    1) La Leche League (free to go to meetings, like $40 to join for the year but you don't have to join to go to meetings).

    2) My knitting group (found it online; free).

  • I found a local babywearing group through The Baby Wearer forums. I obviously have no need to babywear yet, but finding kindred spirits is nice. They communicate through Yahoo Groups. You could check for something like that.

Or, look into interests of your own and I'm sure it would lead to like-minded moms you could get together with for playdates, etc.

  • I belong to a stay-at-home/part-time job/work-from-home club called MOMS club (it's national).  I found lots of groups in my area on meetup.com.
  • I'm planning on taking a knitting class --- probably after the first of the year.

Aside from that, I mostly just work and take care of my family.  Before I was married and had a family, I was involved all over town in various political and social circles.  I just don't have the time anymore.  Perhaps when the kids are older I'll return to my old groups.  Perhaps not.  I like my life just as it is.

    =)

  • I also wanted to add-- I found tons of free activities at our local library, but we won't start going to those until J is around a year old.  But those are all free, so I would look into your local library.
  • My big one is a volunteer group called T.W.I.Gs (Terrific Women in Giving) who raise money locally for our Children's Hospital. They have been around for over 60 yrs in our area and my mom was one when I was little.

We have monthly meetings, but we also do things such as give prizes to the kids on their meal trays, have parties for them such as princess/pirate parties and pizza parties, and have sant'a workshop where they can pick out gifts to give their family. We also raise money with other TWIG groups in the area (one in each town) to finance big projects at the hospital like the recently remodeled ER waiting area. We do this through semi annual used kids clothing sales (we keep 20% of everything sold) and a Christmas bizarre that brings in some really big moola.

It feeds a lot of my needs in a one stop shop - meeting other moms, creativity through making crafts for the bizarre, and buying/selling all of our old clothes/toys/etc.

I was part of a LLL group, but considering I don't BF anymore, I feel a little silly going. I also have "me time" by taking one class a month whether it be sewing, knitting, cake decorating, photoshop, etc - I have a large list of things I'd like to learn!
