Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Has your LO had blood work? Come on in.

My LO had blood work done recently to test for allergies and iron and CBC. No word on the allergies yet, but the iron is on the low side -- 32.9 and the lower limit for "normal" is 32.4. So that is somewhat concerning.

The pedi wants to retest, not just for the iron, but because the white blood cell count is high. She did not say how high, but said he could be fighting a virus. He does have a cold.

But I'm still worried. Anyone else's LO have a high WBC count? What about the iron situation - was your LO put on supplements?

Re: Has your LO had blood work? Come on in.

  • My LO just had blood work done yesterday and her iron was 33.  I was told to get a baby iron suppliment.  Just went to the local pharmacy and bought it over the count.  Its liquid drops.

No help with the high WBC count.  Hope the next blood work comes back reassuring!

  • We had the opposite...when they ran a CBC my DD had an extremely low WBC count.  We just had it redone, although we haven't gotten the results yet.  The paperwork they sent us is in her medical file, which is currently in her room, otherwise I could tell you what her numbers were.

They reassured us that it could have been attributed to any number of non-concerning things.  I would imagine the same applies for a high count.

I completely understand being worried, it's on my mind too, but just try and wait for the results of the new test.

    Good luck.

  • I would think your doc may suggust a multivitamin with iron - we use enfamil poly-vi-sol drops.  You may also need to limit your lo's whole milk intake because that lowers iron doing more other dairy like yogurt and cheese.

I base this on that fact my DS was hospitalized for low hemoglobin and low iron in August.  His iron was 7 with normal being 11 - 15 and low being 9.  He had a bllod transfusion - he was really low not just on the low end of normal.

He was on iron drops for 3 months.  He got didn't like them at first but didn't mind after a couple of weeks.  They stain like crazy so he was not allowed to wear clothes when he got them and I made sure I was in a nursing tank and they are all stained. He is now just on a multivitamin drop with iron. Also, the hemotologist said to limit his whole milk in take to 8oz a day because milk reduces iron. iron.

  • Yes to both.  Although, I thought they told me her WBC count was low but weren't worried because she was probably just fighting an infection.  The next time they tested, everything was fine.  She was on iron supplements and took them just fine.  Besides stinky poop, she had no side effects.  I made sure to brush her teeth afterwards to prevent staining and gave her some orange juice after the drops because citrus juices are supposed to help the body absorb the iron.  It's scary to hear that any counts are off, but hopefully everything will be just fine.
  • Joseph has iron issues. We try to stay on top of it with diet, and that's working pretty well.

I make an effort to incorporate protein into almost everything. Lots of beans. Luckily, Joseph loves red meat: meatballs, meatloaf, hamburgers, roast beef. And organ meats, like braunschweiger and beef heart.

But I also make sure he gets plenty of citrus or other Vitamin C-rich foods every day. C helps with absorption. If we're having red meat or organ meat, Joseph has oranges, broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, strawberries. Something that has a ton of C.

  • thanks, everyone. I appreciate the responses.
