Finding an OB that will actuall deliver your baby...

I am having trouble finding a doctor that will actually deliver my baby.  I'm a first timer and probably have all the anxietyies that everyone else has (or had).  I'd prefer to spend the next 7 months with the person who will actually be there to deliever.  Where i visited so far, they said my doc will only deliver if she is working or on call (she's the only one that delivers at that practice)...which basically works out to a 13% chance of her delivering.  I am nervous about spending 7 months developing this relationship with someone and explaining my hopes and my stressors, only to deliver with a group of strangers who know nothing of me (aside from reading my 'chart').  Any help is great...I live in Reading so probably thinking about a hospital here rather than in Boston.  TIA!

  • Hey!

I'm from Reading too! I highly recommend my ob/gyn Dr. Glen Dixon in Stoneham, right near Spot Pond. He delivers at Winchester Hospital which is only 10 minutes away. He also does the ultrasound right in his office and blood tests are only a floor up. He's super friendly. I've been seeing him since my first appointment September 1st and haven't had any problems. I've only missed him twice because he was delivering. First time I saw the nurse practioner and the second time I just had to reschedule the next day.

  • my OB was part of B/W Hospital but she didn;t actually deliver my baby because she was not on call the day I went into labor. One of the other 4 doctors in the same office delivered me. It was no big deal to me because I was told in advance that I had to have an appt with all the docotrs incase they would be the one at the delivery and it wouldn't be a shock to see someone I had never met before.

  • My OB delivered my baby!  My friends and such had theirs too.. Its hard to assume what is going to happen at the end, but meeting the other doctors is a great suggestion.  Just make sure you pick the hospital you want and then a doctor who delivers there.. you want it to be their "home" hospital.. good luck!
  • Dr. Beth Hardiman at Mt Auburn in Cambridge attends all her moms' births personally.  She takes only a limited number of expectant moms a month because of it.  She may already be booked around your date but it is worth a shot.  I have heard great things about her.

  • I was also going to mention Beth Hardiman - she's my OB, and when I called to get in with her, her nurse told me she does the delivery 95% of the time for her patients, and her particular midwife (Arianna) does the other 5% (I forget under which circumstances you might fall into that 5%). So either way, you'd definitely get to know the exact person who's going to deliver your baby. If you're already a couple of months in, though, she's probably not available for your birth month any longer, unless someone's dropped off her roster. Good luck!
