Would you move onto IVF

after 3 clomid/single inject/trigger IUI's? I respond well to the meds and this is my first IUI and I had 2 follies.  I am wondering what benefit it would be to me to do injects and IUI if I am already producing follies.  The clomid/single inject/trigger meds are a total of $150 a month and the full injects cycle of meds would cost $1000.  I just figure if spending that much more to maybe get 1 more follie is worth it or if I should just move onto IVF.

Re: Would you move onto IVF

  • I'm not really going to comment on moving to IVF since we've decided that we won't do IVF regardless. However, I've been told that the quality of eggs produced with injectables (Follistim, Gonal F) are typically better than the quality of egg produced with Clomid.

I can't speak personally as both my Clomid and Follistim IUIs have been BFNs.

I also have heard that REs like to do at least one cycle of injects before moving on to IVF to see how you respond and get an idea for dosages and what not.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks. I am actually doing a single inject of gonal f with the clomid and trigger. I guess I will for sure do one and then I think Im ready to move on.
  • yeah I understand where you are coming from. It is a tough decision. For H and I, our chances of concieving with clomid/IUI was 8%, w injects/IUI it was 15%. So we did the clomid route because they were about $800 per cycle. When that didn't work, our RE said that injects/IUI would be around 3000-4000 per cycle. We decided to just put that money towards IVF where our odds went up to 70%.

  • I did two cycles of Clomid/Femara with a trigger and IUI. The Clomid cycle I got one follie but my lining was too thin to support implantation.

The Femara cycle I had three follies, and a BFN.

We did an injectibles/IUI cycle this month because we plan to move to IVF and doing a cycle of injectibles gave the RE and nursing staff an opportunity to see how I respond to injectible stims.

My e2 rose rapidly and they had to pull me back right away (and I was on a low dose). This was good because I think it will help me avoid severe OHSS issues should we have to move to IVF next cycle.

And we wanted to make sure that IVF was truly a last resort. If we can get pregnant through injects/IUI obviously that is much preferred.

    GL with your decision.

ETA: we also have insurance $10K of treatment coverage and $10K of Rx coverage. So we knew we could afford to do an injectibles/IUI cycle and one IVF before we were OOP. If we were OOP I probably would have gone straight to IVF.

  • I am in a very similar situation.  I am on my third month of clomid, 1st one I did TI, 2nd and 3rd HCG/IUI.  I too respond very well to clomid, getting 2-3 follicle each time with good lining.  My RE told me that if I switched to injectables, that my chance would only increase by 3-5% because I had a good response with the clomid.  He told me that they do not necessarily produce better follicles, it is just that most people respond better to injectables rather than clomid.

I am deciding between to an injectiable/IUI for the extra 3-5% next cycle, or going directly to IVF

  • Thanks everyone. I have insurance coverage for 50% coverage of procedures up to 15,000 so i could do a few more IUI's and then 2 IVFs at about $5000 a time before we would move onto OOP.  I am so stressed out and Im only 8 dpuiu of my first IUI...i have a long road ahead of me i think.
  • If you don't mind me asking, where in MN are you?  You can PM if you'd like.  I'm also in MN.
