Babies: 9 - 12 Months

baby wearing and airport metal detectors ?

So I went the other day to the federal building to get a new social security card with my married name. Upon entrance to the building you have to walk through a metal detector.  I was wearing DS in his carrier and the police officer made me take DS out of the carrier, take the carrier off, and put the carrier in the bin to go through with detector with the diaper bag.

DS and I will be flying sometime next week to go see DH. Since I will be by myself I was going to wear DS, because I figured that would be easier than carrying him through the airport (we will have at least one layover.) If I am going to have to take him out through security I don't know if it would be worth even wearing him.

So my question is, when I go through security are they going to make me take DS out of the carrier and take the carrier off? TIA.

  • Yes you will have to take him off and put the carrier through.

  • It probably depends on the airport, and the person doing the screening that day.  I've gone through security multiple times wearing DS in the Moby and later in the Bjorn and not had to take it off, but maybe I just got lucky.

  • You will have to take LO out. We went on vaca this past summer with DD and the security check point took quite a while. They made us take DD out so they could x-ray the carrier. It took an extra amount of time to get her out and get all of our stuff back together.

I understand the reasoning though. Just give yourself extra time!

  • Yes they will. Sucks when you have to wake a sleeping baby as I had to do a few months ago, but I see their point in that they have no idea what else you might be hiding in your Moby wrap- haha.

    That really, really sucks.

I still think it'd be worth wearing DC though.  I flew with DD when she was 7 weeks old, so she was in her carseat and snapngo, but I'd defintitely want to wear her if I were to travel now.  Then you have your arms free.  The people at security are really nice and will help you if you need help getting DC back into the carrier.

  • we've flown a few times now and never had to take LO out of the carrier.  but i think it really does just depend on the TSA agent that day.  officially, they make you take the carrier off.

  • I'm surprised at how many people had to take their LOs out of their carriers! I must have just gotten really lucky.

  • I have taken DS through in an Ergo.  I have a herniated disk and cannot hold him for long periods of time, like waiting in line, so technically, I am "disabled", but they did not know that.  I have also carried him through in a pouch sling.  It may be that if you have a bjorn or some other carrier with more than just a zipper.  I took the stroller to.  It is easy to gate check it and totally nice to have, even if you just take a $20 umbrella.
  • I wasn't asked to take him off to go through security - it may depend on if you have a carrier that has metal buckles or not (I was wearing a wrap).
  • Thank you all! I guess I already knew what the answer would be, but I was hoping I was wrong lol. Maybe I'll get lucky and they won't make me! If they do though I understand the reasoning behind it, but its a PITA. Although I'd rather take a few extra minutes to take him out of the carrier than to have lug DS around all day. His 21 lbs. could make my arms fall off lol.

Maybe I am misunderstanding can I take the stroller through security and then on the plane?

Hm, I have an Ergo...but I fly in and out of Washington DC

Aside from that I feel your pain, I have had spinal fusions in my neck and back. I face another.

Yes, you put it through the scanner, roll it to the plane door and when you get off the plane it is right there for you to load up. Called "gate check"

You can take the stroller through, but not onto the plane.  You check it at the gate, and they'll have it waiting for you when you step off of the plane.  Though in all seriousness, I found this to be a big PITA, and I held up traffic.  They were not at all helpful with checking the stroller and carseat (I didn't realize it had to be checked, and started walking on the plane with it.  The pilot made some nasty comment to me about it, so I had to get off of the plane and take DD out of it, take it apart, and then stand there while everyone else boarded the plane b/c there was no one to give the stroller and carseat to.  Finally after everyone else had boarded, I was able to flag down a flight attendent.)  So, if you're bringing a stroller, I'd just check it with your luggage, and wear your little guy.

You just leave it by the door to the plane and get on. I am sorry you waited. You don't have to give it to anyone.

I'm thinking you are right. At first I was thinking the stroller would be easier, but then I was thinking about navigating the stroller through a crowded airport terminal. I thinking wearing him is the best move, even if they make me take him off through security.

Thanks for all the help ladies!

  • I think it depends, they did not make me take dd off.
  • Granted it was the moby, but i have gone through security in Houston, New Orleans, Tucson, Albuquerque and Chicago and have never had to take her out. They just wand or pat me down.

  • We've flow with DD on 3 round-trips and always walk through with her in the Bjorn or Moby and have never had to take her out.

not necessarily true.  I asked this on my local board b/c we are flying at Christmas time and most of the girls who answered did NOT have to take their LO out.  I guess it all depends where you are flying from and how strict they are.  I am kind of shocked they made you do it today.

  • First check your airlines policy on traveling with a baby. They hassle you less if you pre-register you are traveling with a baby.

I recommend the travel system if your LO still uses it. Before boarding the plane inform the gate person that you have a stroller and car seat. They will gate check both, but if there are empty seats they might move you to an empty row. Then you can bring the car seat on the plane and not have to hold your LO the whole time. This is what we did when traveling with a 6 month old and thank god because it is the only reason he slept on the plane. Bonus, we didn't have to pay for the seat DS used.

Don't worry about holding up security you're not the one that made the rules. And some airports have special lanes for family check in.
