Advice/Opinion Re: New Job and Payroll

I got a new job today (she hired me on the spot yay!) in a home daycare. She paid her last assistant half in cash and half with check, and is willing to do the same for me.

I also have to notify my child support case worker of the new job and rate of pay and hours.

What I am worried about is the fact that she would/wants to pay half in cash, but I am not sure how I would come up with a response if my CS case worker asks where the rest of my wages are......

In this case, would you decline to take the cash (would be great to have cash in hand) and just be paid by check?

  • What is her reason for this? Is she expecting you to not count the cash for income?

yes. and i'm not exactly sure why

  • I wouldn't work for anyone with such shady practices. Tax evasion is not something I'd want to mess with.

  • This sounds very fishy to me.  It seems to me it would be more work for her to give you a check for half and cash for the other half instead of just one check so she is clearly trying to get away with something here and you could be caught in the crossfire.  I would only accept a check for the full earnings.

    Yes.  This exactly.

  • what she is doing and what you are willing to do is illegal.

I am an accountant and tax attorney. Good luck with your decision- however if you accept payment in cash you are opening up a very large can of worms esp with issues of a case manager/child support.

  • You need to claim the entire amount, cash and all when you do your taxes, therefore you will be taxed on it anyway.  I take it she isn't taking taxes out of your pay and that is your responsibility at the end of the year to pay in.  It is like a waitress pocketing her tips to not have to pay taxes on it.  Congrats on the new job though! It will work out :)

That is what my previous employer did. She was certified, though. Is this woman certified? My checks had the name of the in-home daycare across the top and it was perfectly legal. I had SS, taxes, etc taken out.

I would not work for cash.

  • if she pays you cash and you still pay taxes on it . you can file a 1099 and then when you pay taxes in april . pay the taxes on it.  .i would however, question why she would like to do that . . it seems a little shaddy to me.
  • Get all of your pay on the books.
