I got a new job today (she hired me on the spot yay!) in a home daycare. She paid her last assistant half in cash and half with check, and is willing to do the same for me.
I also have to notify my child support case worker of the new job and rate of pay and hours.
What I am worried about is the fact that she would/wants to pay half in cash, but I am not sure how I would come up with a response if my CS case worker asks where the rest of my wages are......
In this case, would you decline to take the cash (would be great to have cash in hand) and just be paid by check?

yes. and i'm not exactly sure why
I wouldn't work for anyone with such shady practices. Tax evasion is not something I'd want to mess with.
you'll have a PM in a few

Yes. This exactly.
what she is doing and what you are willing to do is illegal.
I am an accountant and tax attorney. Good luck with your decision- however if you accept payment in cash you are opening up a very large can of worms esp with issues of a case manager/child support.
i gave it a side-eye when she told me, but then was like "i'll let you decide when you start on monday" i don't want cash. i want her to pay me in a check with taxes taken out
That is what my previous employer did. She was certified, though. Is this woman certified? My checks had the name of the in-home daycare across the top and it was perfectly legal. I had SS, taxes, etc taken out.
I would not work for cash.
just to clarify- I wasn't accusing you of anything ~ just letting you know (which i am sure you already did).
