Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

There HAS to be a way to force a baby to take a paci...

I am desperate! He is either fussy or crying unless he is on the boob... :-(

  • My son was the same way.  We tried every single paci with no luck.  He just wanted the boob.

  • I'm sorry. My DS was like that, he would not take a paci.
  • Yup, it was the same way for me too.  He finally figured out how to suck his thumb around 4 months and it was heaven!!

One tip that worked for me sometimes when I just couldn't BF anymore, was to hold him close like I was going to BF, then pop a paci in his mouth and hold it in place with my boob...so he thinks he's on the boob, but it's really the paci he's sucking on.  There were a few times when I just needed a break I did that, or I would just hold it in his mouth until he fell asleep and then I could take it out!  GL, it's so tough at first...

  • Sounds like he is going through a growth spurt maybe?

Lily never took a paci or a bottle, but started sucking her thumb around 3-4 months. Maybe he is just holding out for his thumb. ;)

  • we just discovered today that DD will only take the paci if i'm not around.

i had been trying to find one she'd take (i *think* i discussed this with you, actually).  MIL was babysitting and out of desperation had her father go to the store to pick up some pacis.  she took the nuk orthodontic one no problem (and i had tried to give her that kind before with no luck).  the second i walked in the door, DD spit out the bink and all she wanted was me.  she knows i have the better nips, i guess....

  • DD would never take a paci -- she'd spit them out and give us the most horrible look.

My pedi suggested that we help her find her hands/thumb, and sometimes that would work instead of nursing. Maybe you can try that? DD would suck on her fingers/thumb for the first four months or so and then stopped on her own.

She has never taken a teether, either. She just gnaws on her hands when she's teething.

  • Hard one...in my experience the babies that don't want a paci rarely take to it. If he does go for it though, you'll probably find that you can use this sterilizer

  • I had the SAME issue with C. We own at least one of every.single.brand of paci, it's insane.  I could open a paci museum!

I hope it gets better for you.
