What meds did you take and how much did they help? Did you find any other remedies that worked, besides meds?
The Tums are just not cutting it for me and my OB recommended Pepcid or Zantac. I really don't want to take the medication but it's getting very painful.
Thx!

Re: Those with heartburn/reflux while pg
I went weeks taking Tums, and it eventually did NOTHING to stop the pain. One Friday afternoon I had the WORST burning feeling EVER from just drinking water, and I left work early and went to get some Zantac. I fought taking something more than Tums, but it was almost instant relief. I found that at first I didn't have to take it every day, then eventually I did. My reflux let up for several weeks, but is back again in full force.
I highly recommend Zantac. It is my new best friend:)
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

Zantac worked wonders for me - I really wished I hadn't waited so long to ask for a prescription.
I had to see my md since it got so bad. I was given 150mg zantac 2x a day and it has worked wonders! I still occasionally take tums as needed but I highly recommend taking zantac!
You can get it over the counter and also a generic version which works just as well.
GL!
It sounds like Zantac is the overwhelming favorite so maybe I'll try that.
Thank you!
For me Prevacid Rx (although I think it's OTC starting this week?) + sleeping with my bed on an incline (put 4in blocks under the head posts) + being very careful about my diet (no tomato sauce, raw onions, garlic, spicy foods, mint). I think ice cream after dinner is a good idea too :-)
If you don't want to take an RX, you can try the other items I listed, but if you are bad now at 16 weeks, you probably need to be more aggressive.
take care
The difference between meds and no meds was incredible. I take 40mg Nexium. I was out for a week and was miserable
I get heartburn when i drink water, so diet didnt' help me either.
I am the poster child for pregnancy reflux...its horrible...worse than horrible.
I wake up throwing up in my own mouth, and I'm pretty sure I've aspirated stomach acid a time or two...its awful. I now sleep sitting completely upright, propped with about 10 pillows.
I get that you don't want to take any meds, but there are meds out there that are safe for babies...and I promise you don't want to let yourself get to where I am. I should have started on something way way earlier in my pregnancy, I think, at this point, that I probably have some esophageal damage from the severe reflux during this pregancy.
I have been doing 40 mg of Pepcid twice daily, and taking extra strength Tums in between doses just so I can eat and rest.
Yesterday I started Zantac, and will be using Maalox for breakthrough...just because I need more relief than what I've been getting. I have to say, so far, not impressed with the Zantac.
Sorry that got so long...but its my biggest pregnancy issue...and I totally feel for you...its not fun...
I'm taking Maalox. My OB said it was fine.
