Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

school me on Kindergarten cutoff

The post below got me thinking about my own situation and kindergarten for DS

I just looked up California's cut off date for turning 5 and it is December 3rd.  DS was born December 27th.  Given this information, how old will he be when he starts  Kindergarten, 5 or 6?  I'm confused and feeling stupid.  I always thought he would turn 6 in kindergarten which is fine with us.  Please educate me.

Re: school me on Kindergarten cutoff

  • I think that means he will be 6.

  • he will be 5, turning 6 in three months (assuming a September sarting)
  • I think he will be 5 almost 6 when he starts. DD will be 5 then a few days later she will turn 6. I could be completely wrong, but that's how I understand it. Our cutoff is Sept 1

  • He has to be age 5 on December 3rd or he will have to wait until the following year.
  • Yep - 5 turning 6.  DD has the same birthdate, and we're in the same situation.

  • In Sept. he will be 5 and then turn 6 in Dec.
  • He will start kindergarten the Aug/Sept after he turns 5, so he'll be close to 6 when he starts, but not quite.

    At least I think so.

  • He will miss the cutoff for him to start school the year he turns 5 (so he can't start K as a 4 year old in Sept and turn 5 that Dec, he'd have to already be 5). He will start Kindergarten as a 5 year old in Sept, but will turn 6 a few months into school.
  • Yes, as pp's said, he would start the school year when he was 5 years old, and would turn 6 that december. As a school teacher, I feel it is much better to have an older kindergartner than a younger one. Some of our parents start them at 4 (their birthday is right around the cut-off), then they turn 5, and they are way too young.

  • Half of the people responding are wrong - the cutoff is just that: the cutoff date for which a child must have turned 5.  If your son will not be 5 by that December date (which he will not), he will have to wait until the next school year to start.  He will be 5 - turning 6 a few months into the school year.
