I bought it at the book fair at my school when I was in the 2nd grade. I still have it and it is completely worn out from all the many times I read it. I've now given it to my DS.

omg i loved that book!
i was a big reader. another one i remember reading over and over was 'there's a boy in the girl's bathroom.'
My favorite was banned from the library so I probably shouldn't repeat it.
Spill!!
We're all grown ups now, no one's gonna tell your mom. Or the principal.
It was Little Black Sambo. My grandma use to read it to me all the time. I even remember her saying, "I have no idea why they banned this from the library..." I obviously figured it out the older I got, but my grandma was just clueless. She's not racist or anything just clueless. And it was our thing, every time I stayed the night I always requested that book. It was about a little boy who was chased by tigers, and they chased him around a tree until they turned into butter and then he ate pancakes w/the butter. It was strange. But I'm pretty sure the book was banned because of the title... "sambo" is considered a racist slur.
So yeah, there's my confession. And nooooo I am not racist! I hope no one takes this the wrong way or looks at me differently.
My parents really never read to me, only my grandma so that's why I didn't just pick another book.... it's the only one I remember when I was real little.
Mine was The Thingamajigs Bbook of Manners. I read it so much it fell apart. Years later I found a new copy and bought it in case I ever had children of my own. Now that you reminded me I'll have to figure out where it is!

We had this book at my grandma's! Now that I'm older I feel bad for enjoying it so much. That and Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby.

Don't feel bad, you were just a little kid! Stories can be good just for plot or suspense reasons, or the pictures -- that's what a kid responds to.

I didn't discriminate against any book as a child (and still don't!), but I particularly loved If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and The Little Prince.
I have yet to read this book, but heard it's good. I may have to add it to Q's Christmas list. : )?
When I was really little, I loved The Monster at the End of this book.
Then I moved on to Sideways Stories from Wayside.
Then the My Teacher is an Alien series.

Hop On Pop by Dr. Seuss, I would just crack up laughing at that one!
And, Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
