Success after IF

Those with heartburn/reflux while pg

What meds did you take and how much did they help?  Did you find any other remedies that worked, besides meds?

The Tums are just not cutting it for me and my OB recommended Pepcid or Zantac.  I really don't want to take the medication but it's getting very painful.

Thx!

Re: Those with heartburn/reflux while pg

  • I swilled a lot of maalox and spent many, many nights sleeping sitting up. It was rough.

  • I was on meds for years before pg.  I took Nexium during pg and still take the generic prevacid now.  It helps, and it is totally worth it.  Heartburn is SOOO painful.
  • I went weeks taking Tums, and it eventually did NOTHING to stop the pain. One Friday afternoon I had the WORST burning feeling EVER from just drinking water, and I left work early and went to get some Zantac. I fought taking something more than Tums, but it was almost instant relief. I found that at first I didn't have to take it every day, then eventually I did. My reflux let up for several weeks, but is back again in full force.

I highly recommend Zantac. It is my new best friend:)

  • I've been drinking the Maalox too.  It works for me, but my OB did tell me I could go to Zantac if I needed it.
  • I have GERD and take a prescription regularly, so I knew there was no way I'd be able to get through pregnancy.  When I got prenant I was switched to losec, which works pretty well.  I like that it's a low enough dose that I can take two a day if I'm having a particularly bad day.
  • My doctor prescribed me zantac and I take it 2x a day, in the am and pm! It helps a ton and if I forget to take it my stomach reminds me. It gets worse (mine did the farther along I was), so I would ask your doctor about it!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I took Zantac my first pregnancy and it worked great.. this time around it's not cutting it. Just last week I asked my doc for something stronger. I just heard my Prior Auth was approved for Protonix, so I will pick that up tonight and try that. It does get worse the bigger I get. GL!
  • Zantac worked wonders for me - I really wished I hadn't waited so long to ask for a prescription.

  • Tums didn't cut it for me either and I put off getting Zantac for about 3 weeks. Even once I filled it I felt bad, like I might be harming my baby. However it helped a ton! And then when DS was 2 months he got got on Zantac of reflux. I realized if it was okay for him as a new born then the Drs were right that it would be fine while I was pg.
  • I had to see my md since it got so bad. I was given 150mg zantac 2x a day and it has worked wonders! I still occasionally take tums as needed but I highly recommend taking zantac!

You can get it over the counter and also a generic version which works just as well.

    GL!

  • It sounds like Zantac is the overwhelming favorite so maybe I'll try that.

    Thank you!

  • I have GERD and have been taking protonix since before I was pregnant.  My reflux was so bad in the 2nd tri that I had to supplement it with Tums, but, now, I'm just fine!
  • I tried the tums as well and they didn't work and like you I didn't want to go on any meds.  I drink a few oz of milk when I get it now.  It helps for a short time.  I usually get it at night so I am usually asleep before it comes back.  It hasn't been bad enough to keep me up.
  • Mine was horrible in 3rd tri.  Best thing for me was Pepcid AC (or maybe pepcid complete????).  It was the only thing that would work.  Sorry you're dealing with it.  It sucks.
  • For me Prevacid Rx (although I think it's OTC starting this week?)  +  sleeping with my bed on an incline (put 4in blocks under the head posts) + being very careful about my diet (no tomato sauce, raw onions, garlic, spicy foods, mint).   I think ice cream after dinner is a good idea too :-)

If you don't want to take an RX, you can try the other items I listed, but if you are bad now at 16 weeks, you probably need to be more aggressive.

    take care

  • I've been taking Zantac as well.  My RE and OB both said it was fine.  I usually don't need it more than once a day.
  • The difference between meds and no meds was incredible.  I take 40mg Nexium.  I was out for a week and was miserable :(

I get heartburn when i drink water, so diet didnt' help me either.

  • I am the poster child for pregnancy reflux...its horrible...worse than horrible.

I wake up throwing up in my own mouth, and I'm pretty sure I've aspirated stomach acid a time or two...its awful. I now sleep sitting completely upright, propped with about 10 pillows.

I get that you don't want to take any meds, but there are meds out there that are safe for babies...and I promise you don't want to let yourself get to where I am.  I should have started on something way way earlier in my pregnancy,  I think, at this point, that I probably have some esophageal damage from the severe reflux during this pregancy.

I have been doing 40 mg of Pepcid twice daily, and taking extra strength Tums in between doses just so I can eat and rest.

Yesterday I started Zantac, and will be using Maalox for breakthrough...just because I need more relief than what I've been getting.  I have to say, so far, not impressed with the Zantac.

Sorry that got so long...but its my biggest pregnancy issue...and I totally feel for you...its not fun...

  • my OB said Mylanta was very mild and totally safe. And be sure not to lie down at least 3 hours after eating.

  • I was instructed to take a papaya supplement to help with heartburn.  I never tried it consistently enough to notice if it worked.  That was the worst of pregnancy for me!

I'm taking Maalox. My OB said it was fine.
