If you made the first birthday cake yourself, please come in

Can you share some pictures and your experiences with me? Would you do it again? I wanted to order one, but I went to Michael's yesterday and they have those awesome cakeforms. If I get fondant, I should be fine, right? I am pretty good in the kitchen, but never done fondant before.

  • Whatever you do, DO NOT use Wilton fondant.  It tastes like sweetened up toxic waste.  I usually make my own but you can try the brand Satin Ice or Petin Ice.  They both taste great though you'd have to find them online or a cake supply store (other than Michael's) near you.

I made the first birthday cake because i make all our cakes.  I'd do it again but I'd allow myself more time so that I don't have to rush like I did this time.

  • I made my own and I did use the Wilton fondant but only on the black stripes that I then brushed with food coloring gel so Charlotte didn't actually eat them.  I just pulled them off right before she dug into her cake.  I made sheet cakes for the guests so no one ate it so I didn't have to be concerned with the taste.

  • Sorry I just read that, the guests ate the cakes but not fondant.  Sorry!
  • I made this cake:

tips: for dark colored icing use a white base and get a good coloring.

To make the cakes ahead.  Line the pan with wax paper before baking.  As soon as you can handle it, pop the cake onto another piece of wax paper, wrap it really tightly in saran wrap and pop it straight into the freezer.  Yes still hot.

I did this a week before.  I swear it was the moistest cake ever.  It also worked well on the cupcakes.

From my SIL: you can pop gum drops into the microwave for a few seconds and form any shape you want with the jelly.

  • Are you determined to use fondant? I hate using fondant, never can get it right. I made this one last year using a pan they sell at Michael's and the decorating tips.

  • This is the cake I made. It's covered in fondant and then the buttercream was piped to create the fur.

  • Wow those cakes look amazing!  I made my own cake, but very simply with just buttercream frosting.  So I won't bother to pip.  It was a pink heart.  It didn't take too much time.  GL  (I am so jealous of your mad skills!)

The top is rice krispies pressed into a bowl, then placed on top of 3 9" rounds with dowels for support. The top is marshmallow fondant from allrecipes.com. I would do it again mainly because I'm poor, and I like to bake.
