I know this was asked before: Babyproofing Tree

I saw the post but didn't open it.  If anyone has the link I'd appreciate it.  If not, how are you babyproofing your tree?

DH is squealing with excitement over putting up the tree but all I can think about is ornaments and pine needles all over the house, and how to keep J from trying to pull it down.

Re: I know this was asked before: Babyproofing Tree

  • Good question - I'm interested, too!  I know I'm putting all the non-breakables on bottom and it's tall and skinny, but I am sure DD could figure out a way to pull it down!!

  • If it was the post I saw, it was a joke... I think. A tree hanging upside down from the ceiling so that the baby/dog/cat couldn't get to the ornaments.
  • I'm going to get a small tree this year (I'm sad about it) and I'm going to put it up on a high table. I just don't see any other way to keep him from not wanted to pull at it and rip ornaments off.

  • I'm not sure how we'll do it. Our living room is very small, so having it tucked away in a nice little corner with the playyard around it is not going to work. I'll probably just put the non-breakable ornaments on the bottom, and try to reinforce him not touching it. Easier said than done, I guess, but if it worked with him towards the cat, it might work with the tree.
  • I bought a 4 ft artificial tree and I plan on decorating it with child friendly ornaments with no metal ornament hangers.  I would love to use all of my decorations but my DD is very curious and WILD.  She is already able to reach the high-end tables so I will not be able to put anything breakable on those anymore.
  • I need sleep! I read that as babyproofing Tre (what people call me, since my name is Tracy). I honestly had to look at it 3 times before I noticed it was tree.

Yep, it is going to be a long day!

  • I read a tip in a Parenting magazine last year that suggested spray painting those file clips green (to match the tree) and use those to attach ornaments to the tree.  They're much more difficult to pull off than a typical ornament S-hanger.

I think I might be putting our tree in the corner and buying a play-yard / flex gate this year to go around it.

  • We did this last year: image

We put a Super Yard gate around it and tied both the tree and gate to the wall, so that no one can pull the tree or gate down.
