Success after IF

Those in or familiar with New England

We're trying to plan a trip for DH's 40th birthday this summer, and we're thinking Cape Cod. (We also considered Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard but decided the Cape is better because it's cheaper and easier since we don't have to deal with ferries). It would be me, DH, Toodle, DH's parents, and his brother/SIL and their 2 kids (who will be almost 4 and 6 by then).

Any recommendation of certain areas of the cape or good vacation rentals for a group like that? I don't know anything about the area other than looking on a map. Anywhere else besides the cape that's a good beach/vacation rental destination and close enough to Rhode Island (where DH's extended family lives) for day trips?

Re: Those in or familiar with New England

  • I love Cape Cod - I hate Cape Cod in the summer though, a ton of traffic and tourists to deal with. (But being a native MA girl, it is expected)

With that said, Dennis and Wellfleet are nice places to stay - somewhere near a beach is always good so you can go back and forth or walk around to shops/food if need be.

I like Block Island better than the Cape (but then you have a ferry), or even Gloucester - less touristy but still New England.

  • I go with my family to Wellfleet every summer and I love it there.  It is kind of an old-fashioned New England beach town, there are clam shacks and art galleries and cute stuff like that.  I also like Wellfleet because there are big ponds that would be great for you to take Toodle in (no waves, lots of kids).  And there are good restaurants for dinner out.  It's about 2 hours from Providence and I took day trips all the time when I was in college.

  • Are you interested in going as far north as Maine or not, cause I could tell you of some good spots there.

I actually was pushing for Maine, that was my first choice, but it's probably too far for day visits to the relatives in Pawtucket. I'm happy to hear suggestions though in case we change our minds.

  • Just to warn you, travel from the cape to rhode island is not as easy as you think, yes on the map it appears close, but there is 1 way in to the cape (VERY trafficy in the summer) and you have to go all around then get to the route to RI.

That said my favorite area is Yarmouth and Hyannis. Staying in mid cape will help your commute as well. When I go I stay at the Red Jacket Inn, they also offer 3-4 bedroom rentals although I have never rented one before.

I am another HUGE fan of the Gloucester and Rock Port area.  Not as touristy and it is beautiful NE summer destination. The commute is a little longer to RI, but it is mile wise, not traffic wise.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • So I read your post title, Schmood (hehe) and I immediately started singing to myself... everyone sing with me...

I admit it, I like Barry!

    Last night, I said goodbye
    Now--it seems year
    I'm back in the city
    Where nothing is clear
But thoughts of me --holding you
    Bringing us near
    And tell me
    When will our eyes meet
    When can I touch you
When will this strong yearning end
    And when
    Will I hold you again
    Time, in New England
    Took me away
    To long rocky beaches
    --and you, by the bay
We started a story Whose end  must now wait
    And, tell me
    When will our eyes meet
    When can I touch you
When will this strong yearning end
    And when
    Will I hold you again
    I feel the change comin'
    --I feel the wind blow
    I feel brave and daring!
    I feel my blood flow
    With you
    I can bring out
All the love, that I have
    --With you there's a heaven
    So earth ain't so bad
    And tell me
    When will our eyes meet
    When can I touch you
When will this strong yearning end
    And when
    Will I hold you again

  • The website www.weneedavacation.com has a good choice of rentals on the Cape.  I think the Chatham/Orleans/Brewster area is really pretty.

I had a whole thing written and then I saw that you are going in the summer.  SO much more to do.  There is York beach and there is a place called Palace Playland where you can see animals and go on rides.  There are lots of little shops along the York beach strip.  There are also some nice seafood restaurants around there.  There is a sandy beach with BEAUTIFUL scenery including views of lighthouses and sailboats.

Also, there is Old Orchard Beach (a little far north).  If you are a people watcher, this is the place to go, there are all types.  Lots of fun shops and a huge beach with amusement park.

Portland is beautiful in the Summer.  Lots of lighthouse viewing along with beaches and parks.  And oh yea, more shopping here.

If you only want to go to the tip of Maine, Kittery is great for this, lots of outlet shopping!!

Can you tell I'm into shopping?

    Have fun!

  • We used to go to Truro, MA when I was a kid and really enjoyed it. I would definitely consider renting a cottage if you're having a group go, but you'd have to reserve that ASAP since most of them are rented out to the same families every year. I will also second Block Island as well. However if you NEED to have your car, it's tough to get it to Block Island. There is only 1 car ferry. My family went a few times when I was little and we never brought the car and I don't recall it being an issue.
  • MAINE!

I chuckled when I first read your post. (I'm very tired) and I read 'fertiles' instead of 'ferries.'

  • We rented a house in Eastham last summer with my sister, brother-in-law and nephew and had a great time. We used a for-rent-by-owner website and had a great experience--lots of contact pre-vacation with the owners who could answer zillions of specific questions. We got to the Cape really early in the morning and went straight to the beach, missing all the crappy traffic since rentals tend to turn over on the same day. And then we were able to get into the house just in time for afternoon naps. It was a really great week!
  • Block Island is a nice place to rent a house with a group of people, and family in RI could take a day trip via the high speed ferry. It's a very quiet, laid back island. I have a friend who rents a house there every summer, she loves it for her family.
