Gah! Why is making new friends so much like dating??

I met a new friend today in line at Starbucks - her two kids are very close in age to mine, turns out she goes to the 'sister church' of my church, and she went to HS with my cousin.  We are now friends on FB and I'm trying to invite her to an event my moms group at church is doing tomorrow but I don't want to sound too desperate.  I hate this stage... 'does she like me? did i say too much? should i back off??'

This is so dumb.  lol

  • I know what you mean. I went to a new playgroup last week and I think I hit it off with one of the women there and were talking about the same subject... making friends at this age (and especially with people you just meet).

Anyways, long story short, I haven't heard from her yet. lol. The playgroup is meeting up again on Tuesday. I emailed her to let her know and see if she wanted to go. Maybe she's waiting the 3 day rule. ha ha ha.

  • You should totally watch last nights episode of Gary Unmarried on ABC.  The show was somewhat about this.

  • lol, this is so true. Whenever I meet a mom I like and want to be friends with, I get nervous, can't decide whether to ask her if she wants to have a playdate or to wait for her to ask me, etc. It's very stressful.

  • I know exactly what you mean!  I would NOT consider my self shy or self-conscious, but when it comes to making friends as an adult, I feel like I am in middle school sitting at the lunch table alone!  I occasionally meet women with kids that I could become friends with, but I never make a "move" to get a phone number, email address, or set up a date.

Part of it is me, but I'm partially nervous about what kind of woman she is...I've met some interesting moms!  Now I'm gun-shy.

  • I know what you mean and then I wonder am I coming off too cold and uncaring when you don't call or email. I am feeling that way with a neighbor of ours that just adopted a 10mos boy.

  • I know what you mean!  I would invite her, but give her an easy out, just in case.
