Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Returning to Work After D&C - How Long?

I'm scheduled for a D&C tomorrow morning.  I'm wondering if I'll be able to return to work the following day, or if I should go ahead & plan to be off.

What did you do?

Re: Returning to Work After D&C - How Long?

  • Def. give yourself a few days, if you can. If not for the physical recovery, for the emotional toll.

My docs have told me to take 3-5 days, both times. I took a week the first time, because I was in such shock. This time the surgery was on a Friday morning, so I went back in on Monday.

I'm sorry for your loss and that you have had to go through this.

  • STAY HOME!!!!!  Really, at least the rest of the week, if not some time next week. The emotional toll is huge and trying to force yourself back into the work routine sometimes just delays you from dealing with things in your grieving.

  • fortunately (or unfortunately) I was laid off when I had mine but I would suggest taking a week off, if you can. If you don't have the time, i'd say at least three days.

  • You won't really know how your body will react, besides the fact that it may be a bit tough emotionally. Definately take the rest of the week off, and if you don't feel up to it, a few more days.

I had my D&C on a Wed, took off the rest of the week (absolutely no work) and the next week worked from home until the next Friday. It really helped, because there were times that I just needed to cry, and didn't want to do that at work.

  • I had my D&C at my doctor's office under local anesthesia, so maybe it is different depending on your situation.   My doctor told me I'd be okay to go to work the following day.  Physically I could have done it, but emotionally I was not ready. I took the next day off, but went back after that.  I think you will be able to judge for yourself after the procedure and see how you are feeling. Best of luck!
  • If you're going under general anesthesia, they'll tell you not to drive for 24 hours (as a precaution).  I would have been ok working the next day, but I was much happier at home (I went in the day after that).  Thing is, you have no idea how your body is going to react.  You might have bad cramping and bleeding, or it might be hardly noticeable.

  • I am sorry for your loss.

I had mine on a Tuesday and took off the rest of the week. I had a lot of pain after mine and I was not ready by any means to return to work emotionally (I am teacher and working with kids only reminds me that I am not having one anymore). I would say take Friday off for sure and relax on the weekend. GL and please come back to ask any questions as you go through this.

  • I had my D&C on a Tuesday and ended up taking the rest of the week off work.  I was planning to back on Friday; but my boss told me to stay home.  I felt okay phyisically; however I definitely needed the days off emotionally.  I don't think I would have been able to focus at work that week.
  • I would definitely plan to at least take the following day off.

I had mine last Tuesday and took the rest of the week off. I did not feel physically up to work the next day, after the drugs wore off I was quite sore and had trouble getting up and down on my own. H stayed home with me, my doc said no driving and not to be alone for 24 hours after. It was great to have him here as it hurt to get up, so he fetched me things all day.

I just went back to work this Monday and wish I could have taken more time off. I feel like a zombie at work and my productivity is limited, at best.

  • I think that you will physically feel fine... I did.  But, you should take sometime off anyway.

  • I had mine on a Tuesday and took the following day off to let things sink in.  And to tell my mom and sisters.  I hadn't told them about my pregnancy or m/c yet.  It was a tough day.  Lots of tears.  It's true that the recovery is more emotional, than physical.

I'm not sure what work is like for you, but I remember that going back helped me take my mind off things.  At least for a few hours each day...

  • i had my d&c on monday and took the rest of the week off.. i agree with the ladies.. take some time off.. you don't know how your body will react.. physically the recover time may be short, but emotinally your mind and body needs to heal.. of course every woman is different..just take one day at a time.. take care...
