The whole point of lettuce is to provide a nice soft pillow for all sorts of other yummy (read: vastly unhealthy thus defeating the point of a salad) things, right?! My salads are always like 1/4 lettuce, 3/4 other things. I had a friend in college who never put lettuce in her salads. Her theory was why bother with that when there are so many other yummy things to eat? Some would make the argument to not bother with salad at all then...
Yes, pretty much. You can also dress it up with awesome things like bacon and cheese and creamy dressing... but at that point you might as well just eat some pizza.
Izy and Emi, you guys ROCK! Yes, the ham and the havarti did make the lettuce better but next time I'm bringing some DRESSING! LOL!
No dressing??? Girl, you gotta have dressing! Even if you actually behave yourself leave it in a nice little cup on the side and dip your fork in before diving into the salad with it. You just need that extra tang that dressing gives!

Yeah, I know... I stupidly thought the ham and the cheese would do. Sigh... Some blue cheese would have been AWESOME! Next time for sure. But now I'm thinking about rewarding myself with a venti cup of hot peppermint mocha. Or maybe a gingerbread latter. Mmmmm.

This got me thinking - if you put a bed of lettuce under anything, does that automatically make it a salad? And if you're eating a plate of what was a salad (ie; your friend who never put lettuce in her salads) was it really ever a salad in the first place?

Well, technically there are lots of 'salads' that don't include lettuce. Pasta salad, tomato cucumber salad, tomato mozzarella salad. I don't think the lettuce is a requirement to get the 'salad' title. BUT, I do think that if you add a bed of lettuce, then it is magically transformed into a salad. There are of course exceptions to the rule...I don't think you can slap a Big Mac on top of some iceberg and call it a salad. Though Rachel Ray seems to think it's okay!

D@mn you! Now I want a Peppermint Mocha!!! And I DID NOT have a salad for lunch to justify this!

Really you should just have both.
Right, since I didn't eat the pizza!
