8lbs is a HEALTHY baby

I really don't understand why women are panicing about having 8-9lb babies. 8-9lbs is a healthy baby and not at all overly huge. When you start to get over 10, that is when you can talk about having a big baby. Women are just so obsessed with having babies below 7lbs it seems like. I just don't understand it. I will be very happy if my babies are in the 8's.

Re: 8lbs is a HEALTHY baby

  • I don't view 8lbs as big at all! Big to me is over 9 pounds like almost 10 if not ten and larger. My mom had some 10 pounders as did my oldest sister. I am afraid of having a 10 pounder.

  • For a full-term, 40 weeker, I agree.  I however had a baby at 38 weeks weighing in at 8 lbs. This would be approx. 10 lbs at a full 40 weeks.
  • I JUST WANT MY BABY! I have an U/S tomorrow to see how big baby is and then a non stress test. I am rather curious if baby is big or small ( granted I know that they are not super accurate :)     )

  • I agree. I'd be happy if my baby is in the 8's as well. My DH was an 11 lb baby, so that's what i've been worrying about!! lol

  • My mom always laughs when people tell her they had a big baby and its something 8lbs. or under. My little bros were 9.81bs and 10.7lbs. She had nooo problem and tells me I am a baby for worrying about it.
  • I agree, and quite honestly I don't understand it either. Not sure if this is in response to a specific post, but there is nothing crazy about an 8lb baby.

  • I am also confused about that. I was 8lb, 5 oz and DH was 8lb. I never thought of myself as being a giant baby. Just a tad on the bigger side.

  • I agree with you, but it's also a matter of perspective. I weighed 2lbs 12oz, my sisters were 4lbs 5oz and 4lbs 10oz. Compared to any of us, an 8 pounder is big. That being said, we're hoping for a big baby (for us).

  • As much as it will hurt, I'm hoping for a larger baby... they sleep thru the night sooner!

  • I hope this isn't in regard to my post? DS was 8lb 10oz. He came out fine. I'm not really worried how much she weighs, other than the fact that if she's less than 8lb, I have no idea what she's going to wear b/c I only have like, 2 newborn sized sleepers. I'm also GD, so, having a baby at 38w that weighs 7lb is a very good thing for me.
  • I am all of 5'2'' and about 105 pre preg weight.  I had an u/s Monday to check size and weight of my now 5 day overdue baby.. they estimated 9 lbs 1oz.  My doctor isn't concerned with me being able to deliver the baby naturally! 8-9 lbs seems normal to me!

  • I am praying our second is 9 pounds...With DS, we had good friends that had a baby a few days before us...she born at 5 lbs...Ill tell ya there is a huge difference in developement...9 pounds is just right in my opinion.

  • Eight pounds is a pretty normal weight, but based on what I've read, anything over 8 lbs 14 oz is considered macrosomia.

With the normal birthweight being from about 6 lbs to 8 lbs, I suppose most people would just prefer to push out something closer to the 6 or 7 pound side of things. =)

My first was 7 lbs 3 oz, but his head was in the 90th percentile.. so it's not all about birthweight!

  • My first DS was 7 lb 13 oz (just 3 oz shy oz 8 lbs) and he popped right out after 4 pushes. No problems at all. Unless you have a very, very, VERY tiny frame, an 8 pound baby is just perfect!
  • I'm with everyone about the 10 lbs. I would hope my baby wouldn't be that big. DD was 7 lb 8 oz which I thought was the absolute perfect size. But an 8 or 9 pounder is perfectly healthy, too.

Hehe, my DH was 11lbs too...

  • Yeah my niece was 10lbs 3oz... she was a big baby. 8 is normal and 9+ is starting to get a little uncomfortably big, but not huge.
  • Agreed. The extra pounds don't mean an extra ginormous head.  The few extra pounds distributed across his/her body won't make that much of a difference while delivering.

I had a 6 lb 7 oz baby vaginally and ended up having to have bladder repair. I do have a really tiny frame. This time I'm not worried b/c I am having a C/S and I'm actually hoping or a bigger baby so that this 37 lbs is more baby than not! Smile

  • Push out an almost nine pound baby and then tell me that. LOL.

My first was 8lbs, 14oz, and tore me to hell. Been there, done that, and almost nine pounds is big. Much less damage with my 7lbs, 13 oz baby.

  • I AGREE!!  I don't want anything less than 8lbs, I will be afraid I will break him!

I am really annoyed that my doctor is FREAKING out about me having an 8 or 9 lb baby so he asks me every week about induction.  I don't want to be medically induced unless there's a medical problem!!  I have heard of so many stories where the baby is weighing in at 8 or 9 lbs in the womb and then is born via medical induction or c-section at 7 or 7.5 lbs.  I just keep telling my doctor I am not worried and that everything is going to work out fine.  Isn't he supposed to be telling me that!?

I was not posting in response to any one post. I just see all these posts about "estimated big babies" and I just think it so odd/sad that these women are so worried about these estimated birth weights. I feel like their docs are getting them freaked out about having 8-9lb babies, when really they should be happy that their babies are that size.

I just really don't understand the hype about size ultrasounds and am very glad that I'm not going to have one. I just trust my body and am not going to get all obsessed with baby weight and I wish more docs would emphasize this.

  • anything under 9 would be fine by me. I don't think 9 and under is particularly huge - now when you get to 10+ that's a BIG baby.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I've had a couple sisters induced because their babies were estimated big and none of them were over 8lbs. I just don't understand why doctors instill this doubt in women.

This can vary so much though. DS was 8lbs, 15oz and I just had a 2nd degree tear. And he had a big noggin!

Exactly my point. To make a generalization about 8 ponders not being big is kind of silly. Over eight pounds IS big for some women. I'm not the tiniest woman, not the biggest...but tore front to back (3rd degree and a periurethral tear...more than 8 weeks to recover). And my first had a giant head...so big that the bones of his skull overlapped for months after he was born from coming through the birth canal.

And, unless the OP has already done so...how would she know how big a 8lbs+ baby actually is?

I never would complain about my baby being big...I actually liked having a chunky baby, but there is nothing wrong with being nervous about a big baby. They can do more "damage", if you will.

  • Big to me is 11 pounds lol. My ds was 8.6 and 21 inches he was perfect, I would be scared if I had a smaller baby.

  • It seems big when you've only had babies around 7lbs though.  When they are newborn, that one pound can make a huge difference.  I am one of those people who hopes to have a baby that's between 6 1/2 and 7 1/2lbs as my doctor is predicting.  8lbs isn't big for some people, but I haven't had a baby that size, so that is big to me.

  • I'm pretty small framed, but it runs in my family as do small babies.  I was born 6 weeks early and weighed 5lbs 2oz.  My sister, who was late, was only 5lbs 7oz.  Lucky for me my DH was only 6lbs.  I'm not really looking to have a baby that's over 7lbs, unless I get a throwback...my uncle was 12lbs.  But that's just family history and based on my own build.
  • All along I've been thinking that my LO will be in the 8-9 lb range because it seems like the norm in my family. DH and his sister were over 9 pounds, and me and my brother were almost 9 pounds. My sister was the oddball who came out at 7.5 pounds.
  • Given that the average sized newborn is a little over 8lbs, I agree.
  • For the most part, I agree with you, BUT it is not always easy to birth a 9 pound baby.  My DD was 9 pounds and had a large head.  It took me 11 weeks post-partum to heal from the damage caused on the way out.  Some frames are not meant for such large babies.
  • My 8 lbs baby gave me (then again I am 5ft and 100lbs pre pg) a 4th degree tear.  My 7.5 lb son was much easier.  I hope to be around 7-7.5 again!!

  • I actually want my baby to be in the 8 lb range. My DD was 6 lbs 9 oz & has been small her whole life so far. The drs are always telling me to fatten her up.
  • I was 8 lb 1 oz, I'd like my baby to be around that size...
