This is prompted by the purse question. What gifts do you not want your child to receive?
Personally I don't like toys guns but I am fine with small water pistols beyond that I am not so keen. I also don't want DD getting any toy makeup for the next few years and I find those bratz style dolls a bit over the top. I also have a completely irrelevant hate of play dough so that is on my no-no list. Finally someone one came over and brought DD a giant lollipop, I mean really who give a toddle a lollipop the size of their head, I was not so pleased. Other than that I think I am pretty much open to anything.
Re: What toys/gifts are taboo in your house?
There will be no Bratz dolls in my house - DH and I already agree on that and our families both don't like them either. We're hoping to have no big gaming system. If our children want to play, they can accept what we have or play at a friends. We will not have our children playing Wii or PS3 for 8 hours on end...
(Please let the fact that I have now publicized my hopes not make these gifts inevitable...)

Toy guns, swords, weapons. (squirt gun an exception)
No video games or video related carry-arounds (yet). Don't want him addicted to stuff like that as such a young age.?
No candy dispensers: bubble gum machines, Pez dispensers, etc.

I'm not quite there yet, but I do not like action figures. I find them so incredibly stupid and I hate when my SIL asks for these for her kids for birthdays / Christmas. I'd much rather get a board game or legos or something similar because I find those to be a bit more "educational" than action figures.
Who knows, I may change my mind in a few years when DS is begging me to buy him a few.
I can't think of anything offhand.
I actually see toy guns as a learning opportunity. We had them when I was growing up, and my SF had a number of real guns. We learned respect for the real guns with how we treated the toys. We were expected to treat the toys like they were real at all times: always act like it's loaded and dangerous; never point any gun at anyone else; never shoot or pretend to shoot unless you know exactly what it is pointed at.
I completely agree w/ NNO. And I am so glad I have a boy. I think with a girl I would have way more to add to the list.
Like anything with teeny tiny little pieces. Whey do Barbies and all those dolls always have a million tiny little shoes and earrings and just crap that go with them?
It's actually really cute when they are pretending with them and make up little voices for their army dudes and what nots. Bubba will play for hours with all of his Star Wars stuff.
I don't like really noisy toys, especially ones that go off when no one is around. Those usually get hidden pretty fast :-)
I also hate Bratz dolls, I hope they are gone before DD is old enough to play with them. Really, just the name says it all.
A lot of the things my MIL gives us just quietly make their way to Goodwill in a short period of time. Toys that only do one thing, that don't require any imagination, and toys that play electronic sounds.
Anything blue for my DD! Just kidding.
Nothing big, over the top and cheesy that can't be easily hidden. Um, like the pink/purple disney princess kitchen that my MIL bought DD (and is still sitting in the box)!

I hate Bratz dolls and Barbies too for that matter. I had Barbies growing up too. I just feel like Barbies give girls and unattainable idea of "beauty". I understand that I'm probably sensitive about this because I had an eating disorder that I continue to struggle not to fall back into. I also realize that my issues with weight could affect my daughter so I'm getting a handle on it. I don't want my DD to think that because she isn't a white, tall, skinny blonde with big boobs that she isn't beautiful.
I don't mind toys that make noise. I think the only other thing that I wouldn't want is a gaming system. I've never been into them. I had a Wii and sold it because I only ever drunk bowled. I think DD would be more stimulated playing outside like we did when we were younger.
My neices are obsessed with the 'princesses'
I'm trying to avoid that route.... but lots of hand-me-downs are coming my way with Ariel, Cinderella and Belle plastered all over them.
I also don't like the idea of toy guns. There will be no toy guns in our house.

Nothing taboo. Just nothing inappropriate like heeled shoes or short tops.
I really am not ok w/ princess stuff either. I would never get DD anything that says princess on it. I hate when little girls are called that. Just a pet peeve I have.
Um, you don't think pretend play with action figures is very worthwhile? I would even be willing to debate why action figures may be better for language, social, and literacy development than an "educational" board game.
But to each their own, and i totally get that.
I forgot about barney. He may be even worse than elmo.

I am incredibly happy to hear that. Those things are terrible in so many ways.

No Pez???? Now - I've read some nonsense on The Bump - but this is just crazy talk. Pez are the best!
Yep. My MIL asked for ideas for DS and I told her "just nothing Barney or Dora/Diego". She seemed stunned. My misguided IL's think Barney and Dora are the end all be all of children's entertainment. I beg to differ.
Oh, and God help me if I ever have a daughter. Disney Princesses, Barbies, and all glittery, fluffy pink things will be verboten. I spent 20 minutes in TRU today rolling my eyes at all of the girly stuff that's out right now.
guns that look like real guns, as we have real guns and although they are always in a safe as well as trigger locked, the idea of him thinking guns are toys scares me
and big stuff is a no no, without asking! : )
Old non-safety tested toys that could also serve as a torture device, such as this item that I once received:
Oh, and Bratz. Those are a big nono here.
