2nd Trimester

weight gain at 20 weeks

So, I just got back from my 20 week appointment and I gained 7 pounds since my last appointment with the doctor at 16 weeks.  I have gained a total of 12 pounds.  My doctor said she better not see another 7 pound gain at my next appointment in 4 weeks!  She said I'm half way there so I should only gain another 12 pounds.  I guess I did eat a few pastries at work that I normally wouldn't have if I wasn't pregnant, so I'll have to be more careful and exercise more too.

Has anyone else been told whatever weight they were at at 20 weeks is half of what they should gain?  I'm just worried I'll gain more than what my doctor is expecting.

Re: weight gain at 20 weeks

  • I'm 21 weeks and up a total of 14 lbs from pre-pregnancy weight.  I thought that was a lot and the doctor told me I was just fine because I can gain 35 she said...YIKES!  So anyways, I was betting I would gain about 25-30, so I'm pretty much half way there too.

  • I think they base your weight gain off your BMI index.  Had I not been considered underweight by the BMI index I'd probably be in lots of trouble.

  • I've gained 20.  Had no m/s and a strong hunger the entire pg.  I get bitched at every time I see my doc...
  • I was up 20@20 and now I'm up 25@25... the dr's have all told me I'm looking good.  Starting to feel like a house, yes... But dr hasn't said anything negative to me. If anything, it's been "good job".  I have an appointment friday, so I guess we'll see then!
  • That sounds fishy. I had only gained about 6 pounds total by my 20 week apt, which my doctor said was great, but she anticipates me gaining about 25 all together (not 12, which would seem way too low). People's pregnancies move along at very different paces (I only JUST began showing), so I find it strange that a doctor would segment weight gain by how far along you are....
  • I've gained 7 pounds between each appointment ive had so far..and they havent said anything to me about it yet.

  • I gained 9 lbs since my last appointment and 12 total. I was shocked that that big 9 lbs in 4 week span.

  • I am surprised that your doctor would say that.  12 lbs at 20 weeks sounds perfectly fine to me.  Unless you were really overweight to begin with.  And the half way there comment is crazy, most people gain more in the second tri, weight is not gained on an even distribution throughout pregnancy.  I wouldn't sweat it anyway.
  • I am already up 13 lbs and my doctor isn't worried and really hasn't said how much weight he wanted me to gain during the whole pregnancy...I figured if I could keep it under 40 I would be happy.:-) I would have liked to keep it under 30 but I can't see that happening now!
  • I actually lost 10-15 pounds my first trimester. And I am just about back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I am always a little sad when I see the number on the scale. Just be healthy and active I would say. What happens happens.

  • Yep, I had gained 7 lbs in 4 weeks.  My last appt, I've gained a total of 22lbs and I'm at 25 weeks.  She said I should gain no more than 10lbs.  People tell me "Good Luck with that"  which makes me feel horrible.  I don't want to be unhealthy, but the weight is coming on so quickly.  Hopefully it'll slow down a bit.  I'm walking every single day.  just concentrate on getting your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day, you'll be fine.
  • I was up 10 lbs. at my 20 week appt yesterday and my doctor said that was totally fine. She said she normally recommends 10-15 lbs by this time (25-30 total). I think 12 lbs. is totally fine. Your OB might have just been concerned with the amt over the last 4 weeks, but don't worry about it too much. You might have had something salty & are retaining water or who knows. I was up like 7 lbs between appts one time, but I had just gotten back from vacation so it was totally inaccurate. The next day I weighed myself at home and I was already down 4...I retain water like a mofo :P
  • Considering that 20 weeks is halfway through pregnancy, I would expect to have gained half my weight,

  • My weight gain progression:

    16 weeks: down 2 lbs

    20 weeks: up 7 lbs

    24 weeks: up 15 lbs

    28 weeks: up 20 lbs

    32 weeks: up 23.5 lbs

I figure I'm on track for a 30-35 total gain, assuming I don't start retaining a bunch of water.

  • oh BTW started out 5'6" and 135 pounds...considered average BMI and so I thought weight gain of 25-35 was normal....now it sounds like I'm not suppose to gain more than 24 pounds.

  • oh wait...i can't do math! LOL.  I guess this isn't that far off since I've gained 14 pounds.  That means I can gain 28 pounds.  I feel better now.  Pregnancy brain....dur!

This is the same for me. I tech. was underweight according to my BMI (even though my primary care physician was never concerned) and I've gained 21lbs at 25 weeks. I hadn't gained a pound until my 20 weeks appointment and then bam. Oh well. My OB told me that he would be happy if I gained 35 lbs. Geez! With my first baby I gained 22lbs total and she was 8.3 lbs. Who knows... I still look and feel fine so I am not worried.

  • I have a feeling that I will have gained a ton between my 18 and 22 week appointments!  I think it's common to have a growth spurt around now.

  • I'm in the same boat as you. I gained 6 lbs in a month to bring it up to 12 lbs all together. But my dr said it was perfect and right on track. But I guess that just about half of what i want to gain. I just decided to try ot eat a little healhtier, go for more walks and stuff...
  • I had gained 11 at my appt yesterday.  I was also considered somewhat underweight pp.  My dr said it's perfect and right where I should be.  He wants me at no more than 30 total, which should be doable.  It does depend alot on your pp weight.
