Need advice re: going back to work

I met with a recruiter yesterday to discuss finding me some options for part-time work in my field, finance.  Part-time, because we live away from all of our support network, so I don't really think I can commit to a full-time job considering our lack of backup and DH's demanding job and travel.

Problem is, I'm fretting now about this decision.  I think I might be making a big mistake.  Because of our overseas assignment, we don't need for me to work - financially, we are set.  I would just be going back for (a) extra money in the bank, (b) a blip for my resume to help finding a job when we do go home and (c) for my sanity - it's hard being home with two kids!  But I love it.  I really do.  There's nothing I love more than keeping our household running smoothly, and of course I adore my two beautiful girls.  I think I'd just been going through a rough patch, with terrible 2's and addition of new baby, and was starting to feel desperate.

On the flip side, maybe part-time work would be the ideal solution and I'd really like it.  I had worked before coming here when DD1 was just a baby and handled it just fine, I just hated my actual job.  I just don't know what to do now, and I'm afraid I'll make this decision and regret it.   But if I do tell the recruiter to go ahead I really need to be committed to see it through.

Any thoughts/perspectives/experiences to offer me?  Thanks a million in advance - I am so torn in this decision and really need help!

  • That is a tough one.  I can see how you would be so torn about this decision.  Since you thought seriously enough about it to talk to a recruiter I would probably give it a go.  You could be in a worse position where you need the job and if it doesn't work the way you hope have no choice but keep it.  Hopefully it will be everything that you are looking for but at least if you give it a go and it is not you can always quit without jeopardizing the family situation.  And since you don't have to work you are also in the drivers seat as far as what job you will accept.  Hold out for something that really interests you and that will give you the flexibility you need.  Good luck!!

  • lol- what's a mater?? Sarbanes-Oxley ruuuuuuules. lol. hmmm internal audit isn't very fun- nor is it something that is very friendly for 'at home' work. Have you done any tax work? ~ a lot of that can be done from home.

  • Well, I can't speak to the finance part of it.  But as for the part time work situation, I have been there.  About a year ago, I started working part time.  I enjoyed the work, and had an extremely flexible schedule.  Some I did from home, some was at the office.  The money was nice too.  But since DS#2 was born, I haven't worked much.  Techincally, I still do work for them on an as-needed basis, but it hasn't been much lately.  It was much harder to work AND be a SAHM though.  Since DH has a very hectic schedule and works long hours, none of my "homekeeping" duties were turned over to him when I started working, so it was just more work for me. I'm sure I'll do more work when the kids get a little bigger, but it was hard for awhile.  I say go for it though - what can it hurt?  You can always quit if it's unmanageable.
  • I worked PT from home until my second daughter was born doing budgeting and financial reporting. ?I loved the extra money but grew tired of the stress. It was also getting to the point where they were wanting more from me and I was going to have to get some daycare which would have eaten up quite a bit of my pay. ?

For me I decided the extra money was not worth the stress. ?I do miss the socialization and using my brain in a finance related capacity (I love crunching numbers, spreadsheets, etc). ? I say you give it a try and see how it works for you. ?You may love it and if you don't you are in a great position where it is not a necessity. ?

  • I agree with many of the other ladies; this may be an ideal opportunity for you to try out an idea that you expressed interest.

    Good luck!

  • What about working at home, have you considered the various opportunities. Sounds like you have a great background for it. Anyway, if you don't like how it works out, you can always leave. But I would check this site out. Lots of great opportunities for mothers. https://www.mamaista.com/2009/10/16/when-the-kids-are-away-mommy-will%E2%80%A6work/
